Mary T. McMullen died at her son's home Jan. 19, 2008, from breast cancer.
She was the daughter of Emeterio and Maria Plaza, born Sept. 8, 1920, at the Star Hotel in Elko, Nev. She spent the majority of her childhood in Elko, but did return to Spain for two years as a child. During that time, she became fluent in the Basque language. She graduated from Elko High School, and attended two years of business college in Reno.
She married the love of her life, Joseph W. McMullen, during World War II. They were married for 52 years. After Joseph graduated from the University of California in Berkeley, they returned to Reno in 1948 where she lived for the remainder of her life.
She was very active in the Reno community and was the past president of the Saint Mary's Hospital Guild and the 20th Century Club. She was a lifetime member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Parish.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph W. McMullen in July 1997. Her brother Joseph Plaza died during World War II.
She is survived by her sister Christina Mortensen; her daughter Ann Marie Scolari (Steven); son Dr. Joseph R. McMullen (Cheryl); grandsons Eric Scolari (Tracy), Brett Scolari (Amy), Mitch McMullen (Bridget) and Matt McMullen; great-grandsons Brady, Dalton, Callan, Andrew, Joseph, and Benjamin Scolari; many nieces and nephews; and numerous longtime friends in both Reno and Elko. She also has many surviving relatives in Spain and returned many times to visit them in the Basque country.
Mary ("Nana") was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Nana will be remembered by all, for her elegance, her attention to detail, and her weekly Sunday visits to her family.
There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 W. Second Street, Reno. The celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 1138 Wright Street, Reno. There will be a private entombment at Mountain View Mausoleum.
Memorials are being established with Carmel of Reno, 1950 La Fond Drive, Reno 89509; and Great Basin College Foundation, P.O. Box 2056, Elko, NV 89503.
Arrangements are under the direction of Walton Funeral Home, Reno.
The family invites you to leave a condolence message in the "family guestbook" at the website www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com.
