810 | Dolores June Blanton Cables Echanis OCT. 14, 1929 — JAN. 20, 2021 ONTARIO Dolores was born in Ontario, Oregon October 14th 1929 to Wesley James Blanton and Gertrude Monce Blanton. She passed on January 20th, 2021. Dolores was raised on the family cattle ranch that included the Malheur Butte, surrounding farm ground and nearby rangeland. Her only sister, Lorraine, who was five years older, preceded her in passing on Sept. 19, 2012. The two girls, being the only children of Wes and Gertie, grew up learning to work cattle and farm. Dolores loved her working cow horses, Redcrest and Sunnyboy. She was an excellent rider and roper and the best heeler at brandings, roping 50 head one day. She never competed in the arena, but she was chosen as queen of the Malheur County Rodeo in 1947 and represented Ontario in the Payette Apple Blossom the same year. The family farm and ranch was homesteaded in 1881 and improved through the years. So Dolores grew up milking cows, driving mule teams mowing and raking hay, cooking and cleaning; as well as riding the range and buckarooing for the family herd of Hereford beef cows that eventually numbered about 500. Dolores grew up loving and caring for animals so it’s no surprise that she contributed to many animal care organizations. Dolores graduated from Ontario High School in 1948. She spent a couple of years working for Idaho Power in the Ontario office. In 1950 she married Jim Cables and gave birth to son Tim in 1951 and daughter Tammy in 1960. Several years after her divorce from Jim she married John Echanis and gave birth to Annette Echanis in 1965. Dolores was invited to learn to play bridge in 1959 and she took to the game with great enthusiasm and competence. As the years passed by her trophies numbered too many to conveniently display. She achieved Life Master in 1984 and Gold Life Master in 2011. That same year she was appointed to the ACBL Goodwill and Charity Committee for the five northwestern states, Puerto Rico and Guam. In 2018 Dolores won the ACBL Western Conference, with partner Lorinda Pearson, gaining 24 master points playing against 556 tables scattered across the western United States. She played with many partners through the years, and at the ACBL Nationals in Hawaii, she won first overall with a partner she had never played with before. When the local Ontario Bridge Club suspended play in March of 2020, Dolores had won a total 3988 master points. Her fellow players appreciated her buoyant personality and her willingness to play with new players and never criticize, but always coach. She had a kind manner, radiant smile, infectious laughter and impeccable style. A 2016 newspaper article paying tribute to her 45 years of service as secretary-treasure and local club manager said, “For decades she has been our goodwill ambassador extraordinaire.” She was also known at the many tournaments she played in for making and bringing the best fudge ever. She loved to bake, especially pies, which were just simply the best. Dolores loved to dance, especially the jitterbug. She also loved to travel and, like dancing, she had the good fortune to do quite a bit of it. Traveling with her mother and two young daughters on the first commercial tour to Borneo she was offered the opportunity by the chieftain of a former head-hunting tribe to have her youngest daughter remain there, as bride to his son, thus becoming “Queen of the Jungle.” Standing in front of the shrunken head lodge, the tour guide had to wrestle daughter, Annette, away from the tribe’s chief, who was used to getting his way and not at all accustomed to being told what to do. Dolores was privileged to accumulate many more travel memories throughout her life, many of which have something to do with bridge, but all have something to do with her buoyant and adventurous personality. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved her. Dolores is survived by her son and daughter, Tim Cables and Tammy Cables of Ontario, her daughter Annette Echanis of Los Angeles, California and grandchildren, Hannah Cooper and Cole Cooper of Kennewick and Seattle Washington. Memorials can be made to any of your favorite animal care organizations or to one of Dolores’s favorites, the Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97211 or the Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City NE 68410. A celebration of her life will be held later in the year. | Blanton, Delores (I164094)

813 | Dominique Mainvil and Marie Etchevers were "Etxetiarrak" of the Haranbouru house. It is from this house that Jean Mainvil left for America, and later Catherine Mainvil. Before going to America Catherine gave birth to a son, Dominique Mainvil, 1906-1907. During this time the Mainvils had as neighbors Baptiste Duguine (father of Xemartin Duguine who married Rosalie Duhalde.) From Haranbouru Jeanne Marie Mainvil got married and went to Galerianborda which is about 2-3 kilometers away. The oldest sister, Marie Mainvil, after marrying Raymond Duhalde, remained at Haranbouru. There she gave birth to her three oldest sons. Then in 1915 she "received" her niece, Mary Louise Dachary. (Mary Louise Dachary's mother, Jeanne-Marie died at her birth.) Marie Mainvil Duhalde's husband, Raymond, was gone to war leaving father Dominique the only male at this house. From another source Janice Mainvil, in 1986, learned that Dominique Mainvil died 28 July, 1873 which is a different date from other sources. 814 | Dorothy Marie Bicandi Aldecoa 1922 ~ 2014 Our beloved Tia/Aunt Dorothy Marie Bicandi Aldecoa, 92, peacefully passed away at Ivy Place Residence, Boise, Idaho, on April 7, 2014 where her family had been keeping vigil. At Dorothy's request the pubublic is invited to an evening Memorial Rosary at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 1500 E. Wright Street, Boise, ID, 83706. Reception will follow. Services are under the direction of the Nampa Funeraral Home, Yraguen Chapel. 442-8171. An online guest book is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com Dorothy was born to Eugenio Bicandi and Maria Dolores Aguirre Bicandi on January 10, 1922 in Barber, Idaho. In 1925 the family moved to Emmett where Eugenio and Maria Dolores operated the Bicandi Boarding House in their residence until 1957. Dorothy graduated from Emmett High School on May 23, 1940 as a life-long proud Husky. Wanting to be a registered nurse, she graduated from Nampa's Mercy Medical Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. While living at home she worked as an RN in Emmett's Mary Secor Hospital and later in the office of Dr. Newcomb. Over the years, she loved telling people that she was an "Old RN". It was in the Bicacandi Boarding House that Dorothy met Basil Aldecoa while he was drinking coffee and waiting for his truck to be repaired at a local gas station. After their courtship, Dorothy and Basil traveled by train to St. Louis, Missouri and married in St. Lenia Catholic Church on January 2, 1948. Basil's sister and brother-in-law, Maurina and Don Bowles, witnessed the ceremony. The new couple lived on the J.D. Aldecoa and Son Sheep Ranch in Marsing, Idaho, where Basil and his father, Domingo, continued to work together to grow the business. Dorothy became the company's bookkeeper and secretary. In 1956 Dorothy and Basil moved into their new home in Boise. The sheep business grew and in time became a land and cattle business with several satellite ranches and properties. Dorothy managed the personal needs of the ranch employees with a nurturing spirit that emanated from her nursing education and from her mother, Maria Dolores. Because their employees were from the Basque Country, she used her mother tongue in assisting many to adjust to a life so far away from their Basque Homeland. The ranch employees were very dear to Dorothy. Eventually, Basil's nephew, John Wilson, assisted his Uncle. After Basil's passing, Dorothy and John worked together. Dorothy and Basil were among the charter members of the Boise Basque Association. In 1952, the Basque Center was built at the corner of 6th and Grove and the Association became known as Euzkaldunak. They were faithfful contributors to Euzkaldunak and its charities. In 1963, Dorothy was the first woman to serve as Euzkaldunak President. She was also active in the founding of NABO, the North American Basque Organization. The Basque Center acknowledged Dorothy in 2002 with their Legacy Award for her long-term commitment. Dorothy was an ardent supporter of the Basque Museum and Cultural Center. She worked on fundraisers and was crucial to the creation of the Museum's Gift Store. She volunteered in the shop, recruited other volunteers, expanded lines of merchandise and was at times the store's "best customer". She and Basil donated a sheep camp wagon to be displayed in the museum's gallery. Dorothy was the lead donor in the restoration of the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House. She also sponsored the cemetery plots and the large granite marker for the Basque Memorial at Morris Hill Cemetery, which bears the names of Basque men, women and children that had been interred in unidentified graraves. In April of 2013, Dorothy received the Museum's Heritage Award for her years of support. Dorothy's early Catholic upbringing was deepened by the Nuns of Nampa's Mercy Medical Hospital. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church was Dorothy annd Basil's parish church and they were instrumental in the relocation and enlargement of the building to its present location. Dorothy was an active parishioner. She cared deeply for at-risk families, refugees, children's and music ministries and would regularly bring "a trunk load of groceries" for the church food bank. Dorothy was also very active with the Idaho Catholic Women's League. She also endowed a scholarship to Bishop Kelly High School. As the sheep business changed into a cattle business and they had fewer employees, Dorothy took part in more personal social activities. She regularly played bridge and pinochle with card groups and family. She enjoyed meeting with fellow members of the Boise Women's Club on Main Street, especially playing Mahjong. Collecting antiques and going to estate sales were also on her list of priorities. Tending her flower beds, collecting recipes and mending were joys for her. She and her portable sewing machine would travel to tthe Boise Veteran's Home to help meet the veterans' needs. Dorothy loved capturing special moments with photographs and rarely attended a social event without bringing her Polaroid. She would often say, "PICTURES ARE TREASURES". Special THANKS ggo to: Dr. Karen East, Summer Wind Living Center, Ivy Place Residence, and Legacy Hospice. Each caregiver was especially kind to our Tia/Aunt Dorothy and she treasured ALL OF YOU for your expertise and caring. Since February 25, 2011 "The Angels" at Ivy Place guided and cared for Dorothy and her family during her final journey. Dorothy leaves behind sisters-in-law Colleen Bicandi, Benedicta A. Wilson and Delphine Aldecoa. She is also survived by many Bicandi/Aldecoa nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Each of them as well as many of you has wonderful memories of our Dear Tia/Aunt Dorothy. She was preceded in death by: her parents, her beloved husband, Basil, her siblings Frances Bilbao, Margaret Foruria, Lucio Bicandi, Irene Anderson and Gene Bicandi; a niece and two great nephews In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the charity of your choice. 818 | Edwardo Paul Urquiaga Nov. 26, 1916-April 11, 2009 Our Uncle was born on Nov. 26, 1916, to Lazaro and Josefa Urquiaga in Jordan Valley, Ore. He was the fifth of 10 children. They ran sheep. In 1917 the family moved to Arock. The sheep would be wintered there. The sheep ranged all the way from SoSouth Mountain to the desert; the weather in Arock was better for lambing and feeding and the 10 children needed a school. In the fall of 1921, arrangements were made with a close neighbor, Frank Larrasea to provide his children and the Urquiagas with a school. It was in the upstairs of the Larrasea house. Lazaro hired the teacher. A highlight in Uncle Ed's life was his horse "Champ"; he was a match stakes racehorse in the quarter mile. He raced many times in McDermitt, Vale and Caldwell. Champ won an exceptional race in Winnemucca, Nev. Ed and Mabel went to grade school in Arock together. Ed went on to high school in Jordan Valley, while Mabel went to high school one year in Jordan Valley, then one year in Weiser, then graduated high school in Caldwell. She graduated from My Ladies Beauty School in Boise. By this time they were getting along better than the grade school years and they married on Aunt Mabel's birthday March 17, 1937. They eloped to Ed's sister Chris's in Medford, Ore. Aunt Mabel smiles when she says Chris and Ma Propes stood up for them. Uncle Ed worked for Bill Bruce and was a ditch rider for Arock Irrigation District; then finally the District Manager. The diversion dam was already in and farming in Arock was thriving. The attraction of higher wages lured Uncle Ed to operate a drag line for Knudsen Company in Cascade. They were in Cascade about seven years then came back to Caldwell to farm. He'd watched irrigation projects for several years; now it was time to put down his own roots. Uncle Ed knows roots are important. Aunt Mabel had a horse accident when she was 14 resulting in a ruptured appendix. Doctors tried to repair the damage but they were unable to have children. Aunt Mabel's sister Beverly was 2 when they married. They kept Beverly as often as possible. When Ralph and Beverly had children, they kept Pam and Steve as often as possible. Uncle Ed farmed with precision, meticulous in everything. He was Canyon County Farmer of the Year in 1973. He grew potatoes, alfalfa, corn, beets and grain. They also raised heifers to sell as milk cows. His niece, Inez and he were gopher warriors together. Besides farming, Aunt Mabel and Uncle Ed loved hunting and fishing. The stories of game and hunts from long ago created memories for everyone in the family. Goose hunts began at 3 a.m. with decoys set with precision. Chukar hunts lasted for mileles. Uncle Ed is particularly fond of an elk hunt with Martin Jaca. Aunt Mabel and Uncle Ed went to Alaska for two months for several years. They provided us with salmon and halibut. Does anyone remember the gunny sacks of corn? If he didn't grow the corn, he picked it from the Hermans in Melba. His oldest sister Christina was married to Louie Metcalf. He was Uncle Ed to Kenny and Ed. Ruby's husband was Russell Lynde. Ed, Joe and Mary were their children. Dee Urquiaga was married to Margene. Lazaro, Billy Ray, and Mary Dee Arnett are thheir children. Elaine and Joaquin Jaca children are Elias, Ramona Pascoe and Gloria Jean. Victoria and Frank Eiguren's son is Tom Eiguren. Mercedes and Julian Calzacorta's son is Robert. Pauline and Walter Baltzor's children are Angelia Smallwood and Christy. Josie's first husband was Rufus Yturriondobeitia: they had Richard, Diane Carson, Cecilia and Jim. After Rufus' sad death Josie married George Swisher and their children are Robin Baum and Mary Pharis. The baby in the family is Cecilia. She married Sam Shields and their children are Rhonda Morton, Nancy Smith and Dennis. He is Uncle Ed to Pam White and Steve Eason. Thank you, Uncle Ed, for the wonderful memories. The family wished to extend special thanks to Grace Assisted Living for the wonderful care given. Friends may call Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Jordan Valley Cemetery, followed by a dessert reception. | Urquiaga, Edwardo Paul (I4385314)

829 | Eugene Thomas "Gene" Gastanaga ? |???Visit Guest Book Eugene Thomas "Gene" Gastanaga Eugene Thomas "Gene" Gastanaga, 95, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2011, joining his deceased wife, Ellen, on Valentine's Day. Born to Basque immigrant parents on March 7, 1915, in Paradise Valley, Nevada, Gene attended Paradise Valley Grammar School and later graduated from Humboldt County High School. All during his high school years he worked after school and weekends. He particularly enjoyed working for the local Humboldt Soda Works delivering soda to all the businesses aroround town, particularly across the tracks to the 'girls on the line'. He was often referred to as Barnie Oldfield (famous automobile race car driver from the early 1900's) for his outstanding driving abilities, speeding through town as though he really had somewhere to go. After graduation in 1933, he moved to Elko, Nevada, this time working for Elko Bottling Works, delivering soda and beer to the local establishments. He later worked for Elko Motor Supply, where he met Hadley Beadle. In 1934, young Gene moved to Reno, and Hadley hired him on at Reno Motor Supply. The next year, 1935, Gene joined the Nevada National Guard. He continued working for Reno Motor Supply until he was called into active duty in 1941. He was initially stationed at Camp Hahn as an enlisted man and, while living in Riverside, California, he went on a blind date with Ellen Carolyn Crouse on February 19, 1942. Five weeks and three days later they were married on March 29, 1942, in Las Vegas, Nevada. His brother and sister-in-law from Reno joined them as witnesses at the wedding chapel, where, after the ceremony, they all celebrated this momentous occasion over cocktails and cigars. While stationed at Camp Hahn, Gene advanced from Private to First Sergeant and was then sent to Camp Davis in North Carolina to attend Officer Candidate School. He quickly advanced to Second Lieutenant and was assigned to a battalion in Bay City, Texas, where he and Ellen moved. It was in Bay City on January 28, 1943, they had their first daughter, Carolyn Antonia. Ellen, Gene and baby Carolyn stayed in Bay City until he was shipped off to the Philippines for a 22 month tour of duty. Shortly after the war he was thankful to return to Ellen and Carolyn in October, 1945. Gene was then discharged from the Army, remaining on the payroll for an additional five months. He had never taken furlough as an enlisted man or leave as an officer in his entire career. He, Ellen and the baby packed up and spent this glorious time driving around the country visiting relatives and enjoying life. After moving to Reno, he joined his brother Martin on January 1, 1946, to help manage Martin's four Eagle Drug Company stores in Reno and Winnemucca. Their daughter Mary was born in 1947 and Linda in 1951. It was in 1951 that Eagle Drug Company acquired a large building on Virginia and Sierra Streets establishing the first of many Eagle Thrifty Drugs and Markets. In 1958, shortly after the opening of the Eagle Thrifty on Wells Avenue, Martin passed away unexpectedly and Gene took over the operations of the chain. One of Gene's greatest accomplishments was opening the first "Eagle Thrifty Shopping World" on the corner of 7th Street and Keystone Avenue. It was a unique concept to combine groceries, sundries, pharmaceuticals, bakery, slot machines and more under one roof with one check-out. He continued to develop more properties with this concept until selling the chain of supermarkets and one drug store to Tom Raley in 1973, who, until then, had only small drug store operations. During the ensuing years, Gene was active in the Reno Host Lions Club, holding the office of President and later District Governor in 1957. He was President of the Reno Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and President of the Reno Basque Club from 1969-1970. He was also a member of the Prospector's Club. In the 60's and 70's, he and his partners built and operated the Ponderosa and Onslow Hotels. He was a cofounder and board member of Security Bank and Family Savings and Loan. From the 70's on, he was actively involved as partner and director of the Crystal Bay Club and Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay, Nevada. In his business career he was a smart, energetic and tough businessman, always open to suggestions yet dedicated to finding the best solutions and solving the most complex problems. He tirelessly ran his stores, continually on top of the competition and always ready for positive and forward change. However, no matter how busy he was, he always took the time to personally talk with each of his employees on a regular basis. He and Ellen travelled the world, sharing experiences with their many wonderful and cherished friends and family, often times inviting them along for the ride. After Ellen's passing in 1990, he immediately moved to their home in Crystal Bay. He spent his golden years fishing, traveling, making new friends and enjoying his growing family. Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Ellen, and daughter Carolyn. He is survived by daughters Mary Tolotti and Linda Gastanaga (Chris Rogers), grandchildren Michelle Macaluso (Carl), Jason Tolotti (Marissa), Christina Seiler (Steve), Carolyn Van Lydegraf, Thomas Gastanaga, Janna Ray Yates, Samantha Yates, and great-grandchildren Justine (fianc? Eric Chaump), Jacob and Jeremy Macaluso, Trevor, Kevin and Travis Tolotti, and Ana and Sage Seiler. His gentle ways, his wise advice and great humor will be deeply missed. Goodbye Daddy, Grampa and PaPaPa. We love you. Per Gene's request, there will not be a service but a celebration of his life to be announced at a later date. Walton's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his wife, Ellen's, memory may be made to Hospice of Northern Nevada at Saint Mary's Foundation, 520 West Sixth Street, Reno, Nevada 89503-4423 or Reno Host Lions Club, PO. Box 2287, Reno, Nevada 89505. Published in Reno Gazette-Journal from February 20 to February 22, 2011 | Gastañaga, Eugenio (I1996452)

831 | Evelyn Yrueta Marcuerquiaga Evelyn (Evy) Marcuerquiaga passed away on February 6, 2014. Born 85 years ago to Pete and Julia Yrueta at the Martin Hotel, she was never far from Winnemucca. It has been six years since a head injury took Evy from her lifelong home, family and friends. Joseph Dee Marcuerquiaga and Evy married in August 1952. Dee and Evy had two daughters, Darla (Mark) and Juleen. They were also extremely proud of their two grandchildren, Brett (Annelise) and Derek Boge. After a time at UNR and graduating from Reno Business College, Evy worked as a legal secretary with James Callahan for many years. She then began a second career with the Winnemucca office of Sierra Pacific Power Company. Forever reliable, conscientious, and practical, she never shied from hard work or responsibility. To know Evy was to experience her kindness, never ending smile, and unassuming attitude toward life. Her family and friends meant everything to her and she made everybody feel welcome in her home with hot coffee, pastries, and excellent meals. She was vibrant and independent, yet dedicated to the needs and care of her family. Her gentle and respectful spirit was reflected back to her even when words were unspoken. Evy truly lived her life with a servant heart. She was very active in the St. Paul's Catholic Church as a member of the Altar Society, on the finance and Catholic Services Appeal committees, and organizer of the funeral lunches. Other than her c church work, her second home was at the Poke and Peek. She loved working with her tight family of friends at "The Poke". Evy was a past president and member of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary. She also served on the Nevada Mental Health Board of Winnemucca. Proud of their Basque heritage, Dee and Evy volunteered at the Winnemucca Basque festival. He was behind the scenes, she in her colorful aprons at the dessert booth. Her stamina and faith were unwavering even during the more difficult days. The family would like to thank all the people who cared for Evy over the past several years. Evy was preceded in death by her husband, Dee, and daughter, Darla. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Savage; daughter, Juleen Marcuerquiaga; grandsons Derek and Brett (Annelise) Boge; son-in-law, Mark Boge and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary or St. Paul's Altar Society. She lived a life with dignity and a grace that inspired us all to shine a little brighter. Published in Reno Gazette-Journal on Feb. 12, 2014 | Yrueta, Evelyn Dorothy (I803655)
