1010 | Julia Mendive-Tropf MAY 20, 1926- OCT. 13, 2021 FORMERLY OF VALE On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Julia Matilda Mendive-Tropf passed away at a care facility in Boise, Idaho at the age of 95. “Julie” was born at home in Vale, Oregon on May 20, 1926 to Claudio and Matilda (Altide) Mendive. She grew up in Vale with 2 brothers (Antonio and Raymond), and 5 sisters (Benancia Gehley, Louisa Baratcart, Marie Hormachea, Conchita Aldape, and Francis Mendiola). On December 9, 1943, Julie married Henry Lewis (Hank) Tropf. Together, they raised two daughters, Sandra and Tamra. Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Hank, her daughter, Tamra, 2 brothers and 5 sisters. She is survived by her daughter Sandra, sons-in-law, Mike Eddy and John Larson, sister-in-law, Pheobe Mendive, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Over the years, Julie worked at several jobs in Vale. For most of those years, she worked at US National Bank. She loved working with the public and helping whenever she could. Julie was very active in the community. She moved to Boise 10 years ago, but her heart was always in Vale. She was very proud of her hometown and it’s people. Nothing was more important to Julie than her family. She loved going to whatever sport was in season to watch her grandchildren play for the Vale Vikings. As long as she was able, she attended birthday parties, holidays and just get together with her family and friends. She was very proud of her Basque heritage and would sometimes use phrases that we couldn’t translate, but we knew what she meant! She had that “Basque look” that she thought was her “get-in- line” look. Most of us didn’t take it seriously, but there were those times….the look was just different enough that you knew she was serious. Julie loved dancing, traveling and meeting people. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Because of the situation with Covid, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be sent to the Ontario Basque Club, PO Box 1233, Ontario OR, 97914, or the charity of your choice. Published in the Argus Observer | Mendive, Julia Matilde (I697518)

The next entry is for Pedro Basterrica with the same number. They were twins. The next book contains her "brother", Fernando in 1845. This would be impossible given that Polonia's death is documented in 1838. It is possible that Fernando is Luis's son with his second wife and the mother's info was recorded wrong. | Basterrica Urquijo, Saturnina (I5886235)

1015 | Longtime Susanville resident and community volunteer Irene D. Trout passed away the morning of May 12th, following a short and pain-free fight with cancer. She celebrated her 90th birthday in January at a surprise birthday party in Chico arranged by her daughter, Linda Purdy From. Friends and family from throughout California and as far away as Oslo, Norway, and Idaho attended. She was born January 25, 1925, in Boise, Idaho, to Jesus “Jess” and Josefa (Pagoaga) Bengoa, who were both born in Spain. The family soon moved to California where her brother, Louis, was born in 1926. Her father worked at the California Fruit Exchange and the family lived in the Fruit Growers area of Susanville. She attended local schools, graduating with the Class of 1943 at Lassen High School where she worked on the yearbook, “Rays of Purple.” Following her passion to become a nurse, she moved to San Francisco and attended classes at Children’s Hospital. She then completed post-graduation course work at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Irene worked as the Nursing Supervisor at the Lassen County Hospital for 10 years. In 1963, she became Nurse Supervisor II at the opening of the California Correctional Center, working there until retirement in 1987. She attended nursing conferences in numerous locations, including Tokyo and Singapore, and kept her nursing license throughout her life, making many life-long friends over her career. In retirement, she remained busy with community organizations, ever in service to others. She was appointed to the Lassen Community College Board of Trustees, Area 1, in 1994, and successfully ran for a four-year term in 1996. She also served for a period as board chair. She was instrumental in organizing a local volunteer base for the Red Cross in 2002, and helped originate the local hospice organization. Every month Irene was a dependable volunteer for the community commodities distribution, and was a volunteer for the local Salvation Army. She chaired the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the California Correctional Center and High Desert State Prison, and helped organize yearly retiree activities for the California Correctional Center. She also served as a past officer and participant in several local senior citizen organizations. Her other memberships included the California State Employees Association, the Nataqua Neversweats RV group, and area Basque associations. She was also active in the Lassen High School Alumni Association. Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving many years on the church’s Caring and Sharing Committee and delivering the sacrament to homebound parishioners. She routinely visited the sick and “adopted” persons who could use her assistance. Throughout her life, she was committed to charity and service to others. She married James Purdy of Purdy Brothers’ Logging and raised a daughter Linda Marie. Later in life, she was a 35-year companion to Chuck Mankins, who died in 2007. 1017 | Lydia Sillonis Jausoro Idaho Statesman, The (Boise, ID) - Sunday, November 17, 2013 Lydia Sillonis Jausoro 1920 ~ 2013 Lydia "Lil" Jausoro, 93, of Boise, died Thursday, November 14, 2013, in a Murray, Utah, hospital. A vigil and rosary will be said at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at St. Mary's Church, preceded by a viewing at 5 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's, with Rev. Tom Faucher presiding. Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery. Lydia was born March 28, 1920, in Mountain Home, to Julia Chacartegui from Lekeitio and Pablo Sillonis from nearby Ispaster in the Basque Country. She was the sixth child among seven and the only daughter. She was usually called "Lil" by her brothers—older brothers Julio "Juke," John "Chuck," Richie, Alphonso and younger brother Robert. Lil had happy childhood memories while growing up in Mountain Home—riding her bike, playing sports (including basketball!!) and developing life-long friends. Her father Pablo was a sheepherder, and she told many stories of the summer days in Chimney Creek where her older brothers also had jobs in the sheep camp. Lil was very sharp and bright; she skipped third grade, thus joining her brother Alphonse all through school. Together they graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1937. In the same year, she was named Elmore County Rodeo queen and was given her crown by Senator William Borah. (She didn't know exactly how she deserved the award. While she did ride a horse, she certainly didn't do any fancy riding or roping.) After high school she attended Boise Business School, staying at Jayo's Boarding House, and soon began her career as a secretary. Lil first met her future husband Louis Jausoro in September of 1936 when Louie and three of his friends drove from Nampa to Mountain Home and happened to meet Lil and three of her friends. Ten years later, Louie and Lil were married in Nampa. Louie was a member of and employed by the Idaho Air National Guard at Gowen Field. Lil resumed working in 1955 and was employed by the Idaho Army National Guard, retiring in 1981. Louie and Lil had two daughters Juliana and Robby Lou. As charter members of the Euzkaldunak, Inc. (1949), Louie and Lil were active life-long members. They also were early members and gift shop volunteers for the Basque Museum and long-time members of St. Mary's Church. Additionally, Lil was a member of Mountain Home's Euskal Lagunak and Homedale's Txoko Ona Basque Clubs. Louie and Lil were Bronco fans and season-ticket holders for BSU football and basketball games. They enjoyed traveling to the Basque Country and made five memorable trips together—their last in 1995 when they were accompanied by many family members, including their four grandchildren. Christina, Johnny, Jill and Jude have everlasting memories of their travels, particularly of Amuma interpreting stories from Basque to English for them (including her own colorful commentary). Lil loved to attend dances, dinners and parties. Never reaching 5 feet in height but constantly on the go, she was described as "the energizer bunny" or "a ball of fire." Lil was a good driver with excellent vision, and she renewed her driver's license last March. With her 1992 Explorer, she was good-to-go until 2017. In the last several months, she limited her driving to Albertson's or to Becki's to get her hair done. She was well loved and admired by people of all ages who will miss her wit and enthusiasm. Lil was a living memory vault and was often tapped so she could fill in the gaps or clarify information—unknown or long-forgotten by most others. Lil was an outstanding cook; particularly, her flan and Basque tongue were legendary. One of Lil's legacies will be the Basque band "Amuma Says No." Amuma was a big fan of "her" band and the members: granddaughter Jill and the boys—Dan, Sean, Rod, Micah, Aaron and former members Spencer and Dave. The band was named as such because of Jill's insistence that Amuma approve of whichever name was chosen. Clearly, this was one example of how her opinion was an important consideration in that decision and any others in life. Lil made two additional trips to the Basque Country. In 2007, Lil toured with Juliana and Robby Lou and the Oinkaris (three of her grandchildren were dancers at the time). Her last trip was in 2010, with the Oinkaris and Amuma Says No on tour. At 90 years of age, Amuma Lil was interviewed in Euskera (the Basque language) by the media in many towns. Lil's family brought her great joy—family dinners and trips were frequent. Lil had never been to Mexico, so 14 family members celebrated her 93rd birthday in Cabo San Lucas. Amuma's four great-grandchildren were her main source of pride. She enjoyed Conner's and Josephine's activities, programs and Boise'ko performances. The twins Johnny & Jimmy delighted her in their conservations or when they ate her rice pudding or deviled eggs "gustora." Lil is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Juliana & John R. Aldape and Robby Lou & Jude Gary; her four grandchildren: Christina & her husband Josh Bawden, John Luis Aldape & his wife Jennifer, Jill Aldape & her husband Xanti Alcelay, and Jude Gary; and four great-grandchildren: Conner Gary Bawden and Josephine Lydia, John Leandro & James Louis Aldape. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Sylvia Goicoechea Sillonis and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends—here and in the Basque Country—who have adopted Amuma Lil as their own. She was preceded in death by her husband Louie, who died in 2005, and all her Sillonis brothers: baby Joseph, Alphonse, Robert, Chuck (and his wife Gloria), Juke and finally Rich (just 5 months ago). She was also pre-deceased by her Jausoro sisters- and brothers-in-law: Marie & Jess Bermensolo, Joe & Julie Jausoro, Lola & Ellis Wickham, Jim & Isabel Jausoro, and Tony Jausoro. Memorial contributions would be graciously accepted by: Oinkari Basque Dancers, PO Box 1011, Boise 83701; Euzkaldunak Basque Foundation, PO Box 2613, Boise 83701; and the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, 611 Grove Street, Boise 83702; or a favorite charity. 1038 | Martin Fagoaga Martin (Marty) Fagoaga passed to the Lord May 12, 2016, in his home. Cause of death has been determined as coronary failure. He was born August 22, 1962, in Elko, Nevada to his parents Rafael and Jean Pilar Fagoaga. He was the middle child of three brothers. Martin was raised in Elko, Nevada. He was educated in the Elko County School District and graduated from Elko High School in 1980. Martin was a very driven and dynamic man, raised with the knowledge of hard work, values and drive towards success. He inherited these qualities from his parents who were beloved business entrepreneurs in the Elko area for decades. The family is very close knit to the Basque community and citizens of the Elko area. Martin was blessed to be raised with values, integrity, love, generosity, humility, and pride that perhaps only a Basque family could understand. Many friends and loved ones came to understand and embrace these qualities through the gift of his life with them. To be a friend with Martin was truly to be his family. Martin worked in almost every aspect of the oil, construction, quarry, concrete, paving and mining industries throughout his life. Renowned for his skills as an equipment operator and management talents in these trades for many companies in the Reno and Elko Nevada areas. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 3. He owned and operated Basque Custom Work, a custom curb and concrete company, providing his services to the Reno and Elko communities up to the time of his passing. Martin was a loving, giving and nurturing soul his whole life. Always the one who put others before himself and needs, to help others. His charm, personality, and honest love for all who entered his life is renowned. Epic humor his mastered traddemark. Whit of sarcasm his sword. Generosity his mantra. Open arms his soul. The Lord his guide. Love his gift. Martin was well known for his strengths and values in life. Some may call this hard headed, we Basque call it inherited tradition. HHe certainly lived life on his own terms and how he wished as the strong man he was. There were very few who pushed his limits to face his famous Basque temper. He could certainly stand his own ground with any. Doing so with love of others before himself. Martin enjoyed many things in life. He loved hunting, fishing, motorcycles, and the outdoors just to name a few. The undying love of his pets is well known as he considered them his children. The one thing he absolutely enjoyed most, without doubt to any in his life, was his time with family and dear friends. There are few givens in this world but, if Marty told you he loved you or you were his friend, it could be taken as an absolute. Martin is survived by his brothers David and Ernest Fagoaga. His niece Angeljean Pilar Fagoaga (daughter of David) and nephew Stephen Fagoaga (son of Ernie). His aunt and Godmother Anita Martinez Arduain (Andre). His aunts Louise Martinez Babiste (Jean deceased), Asun Fagoaga (Jose Martin deceased), Pepi Fagoaga (Cecil deceased), and Betty Fagoaga (Nicolas deceased). His Uncles of Al Martinez (Lois) and Joe Martinez. He is survived by many cousins and their children. His extended family of nephew Kodi C. Ellis, niece Ashlee K. Brundage and her son Kaycen Sealy as well as his godson Brian Herrera. He once again is joined in the loving arms of his Mother Jean Pilar Fagoaga, who passed November 30, 2015, and his Father Rafael Fagoaga, who passed April 22, 1996. All now held in the Lord's Kingdom, to eternally dance in his hallway called Majesty. Martin is and will be dearly missed by all. Son, brother, uncle, godfather, and beloved friend. He will ever grace our lives as he lives in our hearts to eternity. A Funeral Mass Service will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church 990 Highland Drive Elko, NV. Immediately following the service, there will be a graveside service held at Burns Funeral Home's Garden of Prayer at 895 Fairground Road Elko, NV. Ministering the services will be our beloved Father Tom Nelson, a true blessing, and adopted family member to the Fagoaga Family. In understanding for the many whose work schedules prohibit attendance of the funeral services, a celebration of Martin's life will be held Friday, June 3, 2016, starting at 3:00 p.m., at the Star Hotel 246 Silver St. Elko, NV. All family and friends are encouraged to attend this no host celebration of Martin's life. For any who wish to send flowers, the family requests that orders be placed through Lee Anne's Floral Designs, (775) 738-4728, no later than May 31st for delivery to the church for funeral service of June 1, 2106. 1041 | Mary Alcorta Muguira, 95, passed away March 4, 2017 in Boise, Idaho of natural causes. Mary was born September 1, 1921 in a sheep camp at Hanson Flats, Oregon to Basque immigrants, Tomas Benita Telleria Alcorta and Dominga Ansotegui Alcorta. Joining her older sister Tomasa and brother Joe, she arrived at 5am, delivered by her father as attending physician and a tomato crate as a crib - she grew up tough. The family was later joined by her younger sisters Juanita and Fran. Times were not always easy and she was a hard worker. In her younger years working and growing up in McDermitt, Nevada, Mary worked helping feed the ranchers/hired hands and it was these years that led her to become a fabulous cook and immaculate house keeper. In approximately 1931, her father Tomas found a unique rock that transformed their lives from sheepherders to miners. The McDermitt Mine (Cordero Mine) was born and became the life blood of the community for many years. She married Frank Muguira on September 1, 1949 in Reno, Nevada and in 1950, their daughter Judy Marie was born followed by their son, Frank Ray, Jr., in 1957. During these years, Mom was a true homemaker doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry while everyone was at school or working at the mine. In addition, she took care of her father in his later years as he lived in the home with the family. Once Judy and Frank Jr. both moved to Boise, and with the use of mercury slowing in the llate 70's, Frank Sr. and Mary loaded up and moved to Boise in November of 1978 where they made many friends. Their doors were always open and Mary loved to take care of everyone. There was always a bed for you and you never left her house hungry. Having suffered a stroke on July 11, 1997, her life was changed forever. Her toughness once again came to the surface as she battled through learning to speak, swallow and walk again. With Frank's passing in 2005, it became harder for her to l live alone and she moved to assisted living in the late 2000's. In 2012, when Judy was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma, Mary moved again to be next to Judy. They lived across the hall from each other at Valley View Garden Plaza and Mary was a true Mom. They were able to connect in a way that was truly a blessing – each taking care of the other. Visiting was one of her favorite pastimes and she never knew a stranger. Mom was very proud of her Basque heritage and loved listening to the Basque Choir when they visited her every year at Christmas time. In addition, she always enjoyed speaking with Father Antonio Eguiguren when he went to Valley View to visit. Mary is survived by her son Frank R Muguira (Mary) and her sisters Tomie Bengochea and Juanita Nachiondo. Mary (Amuma) has three grandchildren of whom she was most proud of: Anecia Henrikson, Thomas Muguira (MaryPat) and Julie Muguira. Mary also has ""three great grandchildren, whom she deemed 'perfect':"" Jace Henrikson, Emma Muguira and Jett Eller, all of Boise, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was preceded in death by ¬¬¬¬her parents Tomas and Dominga Alcorta, her husband Frank, daughter Judy Henrikson, her brother Joe Alcorta (Betty/deceased), and sister Frances Mariluch (Butch/deceased) along with numerous nieces and nephews, and brother-in-laws Pete Bengochea and Joe Nachiondo. A Rosary will be held Friday, March 10, 2017 at 7pm at Summers Funeral Home on Bannock Street, Boise with a viewing from 5-7pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 10am Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Latah Street, Boise with lunch following and graveside services thereafter at Dry Creek Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Biotzetik Basque Choir, Basque Museum & Cultural Center (both addresses of: 611 Grove Street, Boise ID 83702) or a charity of your choice .
