60 Andy Echanis, a long time Pendleton resident and businessman, known for
decades as Andy "Blitz" throughout Umatilla and Morrow counties, died
early Sunday evening, July 8. He was 93 years old.

Born Andres Jose Echanis, June 12th, 1919 at a Basque boarding house on
Grove Street in Boise, Idaho. He was the eldest of five children of Ignacio
"Jack" Echanis and Maria Pagoaga, both Basque immigrants from Spain. He
grew up in Ontario, Oregon in his family-owned boarding house for Basque
sheep herders. All through his school years he excelled in sports; football,
basketball, and baseball. Also, as a teenager and a young man he worked as
a camp tender in his family sheep business in the Steens mountains area of
southeast Oregon. It is estimated that he has his named carved on close to
500 trees on the mountain dating back to the 1930's which are now part of a
historical landmark in that area. He had provided a good deal of oral history
for the Boise Basque Museum on his subject, as well as his experience in
meeting new Basque immigrants to the Ontario Area at the train station and
orienting them to the town as he spoke fluent Basque.

Andy graduated from Ontario High School in 1939 and attended Oregon
State University on a baseball scholarship until he joined the United States
Marine Corps in 1942. He was promoted to the rank of master Tech
Sergeant. He was also designated as a rifle marksman and air crafter armory
specialist. He served in the Marshall Island Operations specifically on
Midway Island and Guam in the south Pacific during World War II.

After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Ontario and worked various jobs,
mostly related to the beverage industry. Eventually, he became the district
sales representative for Lucky Lager beer in Yakima, Washington. In
January 1953, he married Lucy McKnight and his son and daughter were
born in Yakima.

In 1956, he moved to Pendleton after purchasing Umatilla Distributing, a
beer and wine sales company. The business grew and prospered over the
next 28 years until its sale in 1984. He became known as Andy "Blitz"
because Blitz-Weinhard was one of the name brand beers that he sold which
he made very popular in this area.

Besides being known for his capacity for hard work, he had a great love for
hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Andy also enjoyed cooking specialty
Basque dishes learned in his early sheep camp days. He specialized in Dutch
oven campfire bread and worked on many of the large lamb barbecues put
on by Mario's Basque Barbecue in this area. After his retirement from the
beer business, he worked well into his 80's at the Rainbow Cafe on Main
Street in Pendleton arriving sometimes as early as 4:30 am to oversee its
opening at 6 am of the bar and restaurant as a relief manager for his long
term friend, Don Webb.

In June 1975, he married Thelma Purcell of Pendleton, they were married
for 37 years.

Andy is proceeded in death by his parents and one brother. Cam Echanis.
Besides his wife, Thelma, he is survived by a daughter Paula Rosenberg,
Pendleton, and a son Carols Echanis, East Hampton, New York. Also, a step
son and daughter, Bruce Purcell and Kirn Hinkle, both of Pendleton. Seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two younger brothers, John and
Frank Echanis and a sister, Josephine Keim, all of Ontario, survive as well.

In lieu of a funeral service a celebration of life will be held at the Pendleton
Elks Lodge on Saturday, July 14 2012 at 1 pm. Donations in Andy's name
may be made to the local Humane Society or to the Ontario Basque
Museum.

61 Anita A. Priddy was born on July 25, 1928 in McDermitt, NV to Pedro and Romana Albisu. She passed away May 30, in Sacramento, at the age of 90 while recovering from several small strokes and recent hip surgery.

She was preceded in death by Pedro and Romana and is the last of seven siblings. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as a long list of dear friends and former neighbors from Lafayette, Vacaville, and Nevada.

Anita started her education in the small northern Nevada ranching and mining town of McDermitt. Since McDermitt did not have a high school, Anita went to live with her sister and other family members in Richmond, CA where most of the family was employed in the ship yards during World War II, except for three brothers who were in the armed service and stationed abroad. Anita attended and graduated from Richmond Union High School in 1946.

It was at Richmond High that Anita met the love of her life, Alvin P. Priddy. They married in 1948 and following Al's military service (which took both of them to Germany), they returned to the Bay Area where Al attended UC Berkeley and obtained a degree in Optometry.

During this time, Anita worked as an administrative assistant for Union Oil in Rodeo, and later in the same position for the Concord Unified School District. Dr. Priddy established his optometric practice in Lafayette, and Anita and Al settled there.

Starting in 1982, Al experienced a host of medical problems which required him to sell his practice and return home. Anita devoted herself to caring for Al until his death in 1992. Anita then moved to Vacaville, where she spent more than 25 years in a retirement community called Leisure Town.

Anita involved herself in a host of activities while there, but she seemed to be most proud of her volunteer work for the Vacaville Police Department for nearly 16 years.

Anita had a kind and gentle spirit and was compassionate to a fault. With an easy-going manner, Anita attracted life-long friends wherever she went.

She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church and she was exceedingly proud of her Spanish Basque heritage and family.

Anita will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon alongside her husband Alvin.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vacaville, with a reception following in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local SPCA or Catholic Charities in Anita's name.

Aquel mismo año, regresó a Jordan Valley.

Elaine F. Jaca (Amuma), 91, Jordan Valley, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at a care facility in Nampa. Rosary Devotions will be recited at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Jordan Valley. Interment will follow at the Jordan Valley Cemetery.

Elaine was born Aug. 16, 1914, the fourth of 10 children born to Lazaro and Josefa (Aldecoa) Urquiaga, Jordan Valley. She was educated in Jordan Valley and Arock. She married Joaquin Jaca on March 26, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caldwell. Born to this marriage were three children, Elias Jaca, Reynolds Creek, Ramona Pascoe, Jordan Valley and a baby daughter who passed away, Gloria Jean Jaca.

Elaine and Joaquin began their married life at the Crooked Creek Ranch and the Bowden Ranch. In 1940 they purchased the ranch in Jordan Valley which later became known as Jaca Bros. This was the house she considered home and they raised their family here. She lived at this place until November of 2001, when the ranch was sold.

Elaine's home was always open to everyone with a wonderful meal or a good cup of coffee and a yummy dessert. She cooked many meals for whoever might drop into the ranch for business or pleasure. We will never forget her really good cookies and her very special Basque cooking. Amuma's afghans are still being enjoyed by family and friends.

Elaine leaves a son, Elias (Inez) Jaca, Nampa; two grandchildren Luisa (Kelly) Munsee, Kimberly, Idaho, and Martin (Susan) Jaca, Given Springs; a daughter, Ramona (Nick) Pascoe, Jordan Valley; three grandchildren, Jeannie (Mike) Stanford, Jordan Valley; Jacque (Jes) Naegle, Jordan Valley and Jim Pascoe, Jordan Valley; five wonderful great grandchildren, Shane Stanford, Kuna, Brandi (Jess) Lisle, Bruneau, Nickie Naegle, Jordan Valley and Matea and Josune Jaca, Given Springs; four sisters, Vic Eiguren, Polly Baltzor, Josie Swisher and Cecilia Shields; one brother, Ed Urquiaga; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joaquin Jaca; daughter, Gloria Jean; her mother and father; three sisters, Chris Metcalf, Ruby Lynde and Mercedes Calzacorta; and a brother, Domingo Urquiaga.

The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful hospice care givers and caring staff at Dove's Landing.

Memorials can be made to St. Bernard's Catholic church, Box 186, Jordan Valley, OR 97910 or to Gaurdian Hospice, 512 N. Kings Road, Nampa, ID 83687.
