    Paul Mendiola 1930 - 2011 Paul Mendiola, 81, of Payette, Idaho, passed away December 20, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. Paul was born in Winnemucca, Nevada January 26, 1930 to Joseph and Mary (Lasa) Mendiola. He attended school in Harper, Oregon and graduated in 1948. He married the love of his life, Mona Smith, in 1950. They moved to Nevada where Paul worked at the Getchel Mine. Later they moved to Harper, Oregon where Paul worked for the Union Pacific railroad repairing ttunnels. He also worked for State of Oregon highway division building bridges. In 1956, he and Mona moved to Ontario, Oregon where he began his lifelong career of farming. His passion for farming lasted 56 years and the time working alongside his wife and children instilled his tireless work ethic to them. He could repair any machinery from pickups to mammoth combines, tractors and cars as well as the little machines the kids drove around the farm. He was a man of integrity who kept prromises and honored commitments. His grandchildren were one of the greatest joys of his life and the memories created will never be forgotten by any of them. He also loved to watch all sports on TV, especially football, baseball, and golf. He wawas an avid reader and it was nearly impossible to find a book that he had not read. Paul is survived by Mona, his loving wife of 61 years, his 6 children, Dennis Mendiola(Glenda), Steve Mendiola (Kim), Paula Fritts (Steve), Pam Belisle, Patricia Perrin (Jeff), John Mendiola (Terrie) , 15 grandchildren, Tim (Debbie) Belisle, Jason Mendiola, Luke (Bradi) Fritts, Jennifer (Glenn) Deveney, Tiffany (Ben) Eaton, MariJo (Shawn) Maybon, Ty (Christina) Ingram, Cassandra (Karl) Stelljes, Juliann (Dane) Edmunson, Adam Mendiola, Jacqueline Mendiola, Michael Jacobs, Pamela (Michael) Mendiola, Amanda Perrin, and Callie Perrin; his 23 great-grandchildren, Chase Widner, Christian Mendiola, Kody Belisle, Kolton Belisle, Grace Mendiola, Bradlley Mendiola, Dejia Mendiola, Madison Fritts, Payton Fritts, Camryn Eaton, Brian Deveney, Donovon Deveney, Brooklyn Mendiola, Bianca Hendon, Jeremy Hendon, Hailey Dobson, Sierra Dobson, Addison Eaton, Kate Stelljes, Carli Stelljes, Chasen Ingram, Isabella Schlager, Lucas Edmunson, Samantha Maybon, 1 great-great grandchild, Brynlee Widner; brothers Larry Mendiola (Dottie) and George Mendiola (Carol); his sister Joan Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews, many good friends, and his fat black lab, Gage. He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Katie Fritts, a son-in-law, Jack Walchel, and a brother-in-law, Bob Anderson. Our family would like to thank Lisa Phillips, ANP, for the wonderful care she provided, LiLinda Burdic, RN, and Barbara Curtis-Lewis for their kindness and understanding, and all the staff at Heart 'n Home Hospice for making Dad comfortable throughout his final days. The family asks that memorials be made to St. Luke's, MSTI, Heart 'n Home Hospice & Palliative Care. Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 23, 2011 at 1 pm at Lienkaemper Chapel, Ontario.     Mona Arlene Mendiola
    On May 20, 2023, Mona Mendiola of Fruitland, Idaho passed away peacefully at the age of 89 at her home surrounded by her family. Mona was born in Ontario, Oregon on March 18, 1934, to Frank Smith and Dorothy Woodward. She was raised in Westfall, Oregon, and attended school in Harper, Oregon. Mona married the love of her life, Paul Mendiola, in 1950. They moved to Nevada for work and later moved to Harper, Oregon. In 1956 they moved to Ontario, Oregon where they began a lifelong career of farming and raising 6 children. Her grandchildren were one of the greatest joys in her life and the memories created will never be forgotten by any of them. She loved watching western movies, cooking, and baking. Every child and grandchildren will be the first to say that she was the best cook - especially her fried chicken and homemade rolls. Another passion that many will remember her for was her outstanding cakes. Whether it was for a wedding or a birthday, you could always count on Mona's cakes to be not only beautiful but delicious! She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She was always the first to offer help and take meals to the home of the sick or upon a family losing a loved one. All her children and her grandchildren could always have friends join them for dinner, everyone was always welcomed, especially on the holidays. She made sure to have Christmas gifts for anybody extra that stopped by. Christmas decorating, baking, and giving gifts were her favorite things to do. Mona belonged to the Hyline Solana Club when she lived on the Oregon Slope, she was also a lifetime member of the Ontario Basque Club. Club meetings and the lifelong friendships that were formed were a highlight of her life.
    Mona is survived by her children, Dennis Mendiola (Glenda), Steve Mendiola (Kim), Paula Fritts (Steve), Pam Morris (Jeff), Patricia Perrin (Jeff), John Mendiola (Terrie), 15 grandchildren, Tim (Debbie) Belisle, Jason Mendiola, Jennifer (Glenn) Deveney, Michael (Taylor) Jacobs, Luke (Bradi) Fritts, Cassandra (Karl) Stelljes, Tiffany (Dan) Vannoy, Callie Jackson, Amanda Perrin, MariJo (Shawn) Maybon, Juliann (Dane) Edmunson, Pamela (Michael) Schlager, Adam (Kashlee) Mendiola, Ty (Christina) Ingram,, Jacqueline (Benjamin Palmer), 43 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother Sonny (Judy) Smith, brother-in-law George (Carol) Mendiola, sister-in-law Dottie Mendiola, and sister-in-law Joan Anderson; numerous nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Mendiola; her parents, Frank and Dorothy; a granddaughter, Katie Fritts; a son-in-law, Jack Walchel; a brother, Dick Smith; a sister, Mildred Arriola; a brother-in-law; Danny Arriola; a brother-in-law Larry Mendiola; a brother-in-law Bob Anderson and a nephew, William Arriola.
    Special thanks to Steve and Paula Fritts for the loving care of Mom these past years.
    A viewing will be held on May 29 at Lienkaemper Funeral Home from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday May 30 at Lienkaemper Funeral Home, 78 NW 1 Ave. Ontario, Oregon, at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Oregon. A lunch reception will follow at the Train Depot in Ontario. The family asks that memorials be made to Malheur County Fairgrounds and The Ronald McDonald House.

    Mary Beatrice Lasa Mendiola, 100, Payette, died peacefully at home, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003. Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Ontario's Lienkaemper Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Lienkaemper Chapel with Father Calvin Blankenship, presiding. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Ontario.

    Mary was born Aug. 15, 1903, on a ranch near McDermitt, Nev., to Dorateo Lasa and Maria Telleria Lasa. She attended School in McDermitt. She worked in the Basque boarding house in Boise, then returned to McDermitt where she assisted a doctor by driving him to his calls, first in his horse and buggy, then later in his car.

    Mary Beatrice Lasa and Joseph Domingo Mendiola were married Jan. 21, 1928, in Winnemucca, Nev., where they owned and operated the Overland Hotel. In 1936, they moved to Oregon. They ranched near Harper and later near Vale until they retired. She and Joe lived in Vale for a few years before moving to Payette to be near their oldest son, Paul.

    She was a member of the Pioneer Club of Willowcreek, and St. Patricks Church in Vale. She loved to crochet and spend time with her grandchildren, who remembered her for her hard work, good humor and generosity.

    Mary is Survived by her three sons, and their spouses, Paul and Mona Mendiola, Payette, Larry and Dottie Mendiola, Vale, George and Carol Mendiola, Boise; one daughter, Joan Anderson, Umatilla; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; Her sisters, Annie Naveran, McDermitt and Cassie Duarte, Oklahoma; Several nieces and nephews, living in Nevada, Idaho and Oklahoma.

    Mary was preceded in death by her husband; seven siblings; two children and one great-granddaughter.

    The family suggests that memorials may be made to XL Hospice in care of Lienkaemper Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Ontario, OR 97914
