    Notes:

Andy Echanis, a long time Pendleton resident and businessman, known for
decades as Andy "Blitz" throughout Umatilla and Morrow counties, died
early Sunday evening, July 8. He was 93 years old.

Born Andres Jose Echanis, June 12th, 1919 at a Basque boarding house on
Grove Street in Boise, Idaho. He was the eldest of five children of Ignacio
"Jack" Echanis and Maria Pagoaga, both Basque immigrants from Spain. He
grew up in Ontario, Oregon in his family-owned boarding house for Basque
sheep herders. All through his school years he excelled in sports; football,
basketball, and baseball. Also, as a teenager and a young man he worked as
a camp tender in his family sheep business in the Steens mountains area of
southeast Oregon. It is estimated that he has his named carved on close to
500 trees on the mountain dating back to the 1930's which are now part of a
historical landmark in that area. He had provided a good deal of oral history
for the Boise Basque Museum on his subject, as well as his experience in
meeting new Basque immigrants to the Ontario Area at the train station and
orienting them to the town as he spoke fluent Basque.

Andy graduated from Ontario High School in 1939 and attended Oregon
State University on a baseball scholarship until he joined the United States
Marine Corps in 1942. He was promoted to the rank of master Tech
Sergeant. He was also designated as a rifle marksman and air crafter armory
specialist. He served in the Marshall Island Operations specifically on
Midway Island and Guam in the south Pacific during World War II.

After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Ontario and worked various jobs,
mostly related to the beverage industry. Eventually, he became the district
sales representative for Lucky Lager beer in Yakima, Washington. In
January 1953, he married Lucy McKnight and his son and daughter were
    born in Yakima.

In 1956, he moved to Pendleton after purchasing Umatilla Distributing, a
beer and wine sales company. The business grew and prospered over the
next 28 years until its sale in 1984. He became known as Andy "Blitz"
because Blitz-Weinhard was one of the name brand beers that he sold which
he made very popular in this area.

Besides being known for his capacity for hard work, he had a great love for
hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Andy also enjoyed cooking specialty
Basque dishes learned in his early sheep camp days. He specialized in Dutch
oven campfire bread and worked on many of the large lamb barbecues put
on by Mario's Basque Barbecue in this area. After his retirement from the
beer business, he worked well into his 80's at the Rainbow Cafe on Main
Street in Pendleton arriving sometimes as early as 4:30 am to oversee its
opening at 6 am of the bar and restaurant as a relief manager for his long
    term friend, Don Webb.

In June 1975, he married Thelma Purcell of Pendleton, they were married
    for 37 years.

Andy is proceeded in death by his parents and one brother. Cam Echanis.
Besides his wife, Thelma, he is survived by a daughter Paula Rosenberg,
Pendleton, and a son Carols Echanis, East Hampton, New York. Also, a step
son and daughter, Bruce Purcell and Kirn Hinkle, both of Pendleton. Seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two younger brothers, John and
Frank Echanis and a sister, Josephine Keim, all of Ontario, survive as well.

In lieu of a funeral service a celebration of life will be held at the Pendleton
Elks Lodge on Saturday, July 14 2012 at 1 pm. Donations in Andy's name
may be made to the local Humane Society or to the Ontario Basque
    Museum.

    Obituary of Josephine M Keim
Josephine Martina Echanis Keim, 98 of Ontario, Oregon passed peacefully at home Wednesday, July 20, 2022. Josephine, was born September 19th 1923, to Ygnacio “Jack” and Maria Echanis who emigrated from Spain to the US in the early 1900’s.

Josephine’s family operated a sheep business in the Steens Mountains and then opened their home for a Basque Boarding house in 1922 where the sheep herders from Spain had a place to live. Josephine helped her mother prepare meals for her family and boarders, gardened, canned fruits and vegetables, and cleaned the 15 room house after school. She also acted as an interpreter for the boarders when making banking decisions and business transactions. Their home became a landmark in Ontario because of its importance for the local history of the Basque people and a gathering place for the boarders and families of the Basques community in the surrounding area. The home hosted the first Basque dance in the boarding house in 1942.

Josephine married Charles (Chick) Keim in 1956. They resided in the Boarding House as she continued to work and care for her family and parents. Together, they raised three children, Tom, Mary Jo, and Tony. She was active in her children’s school activities, field trips, religious education, and would always have fresh baked goodies for everyone who visited their home. She welcomed everyone who walked in the door. She spoiled her four brothers and loved each of her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports and traveled to attend their sporting events. If she was unable to attend, she would sit by the radio and listened to each play and knew each player on the team. She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Altar Society and helped to form the Ontario Basque Club in 1947. She was inducted into the Basque Hall of Fame in 2007 which was featured in New York, and she documented her families’ Basque history in 2016 which can be seen at the Boise Basque Museum in Boise, Idaho.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Chick) Keim, her four brothers, Andres, Carmelo, John and Frank Echanis, her parents Jack and Maria Echanis, her Sisters-in-law Pat, Lucey and Delores Echanis, nephew Mike Echanis, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her son Tom Keim and Jan Pennington, her daughter Mary Jo and husband Brett Flynn, and her son Tony Keim and Kellie Russell. She loved her 13 grand-children; Greg Keim, Jake & Joey Zabala, Toby, Keanna, Kylee, and Kody Keim, Healther and Carra Flynn, Samantha Herrera, Matison & Abigail Youngblood, and Erik Perkins. She adored her eight great-grandchildren; Sage & Jack Keim, Hadley & Ryan Lassandro, Jayce and Ava McClure, and Whitney and Ava Perkins, and her sister-in-law Lourena Echanis and numerous nieces and nephews that were an active part of her life whom she loved dearly.

We will remember Josephine for the unconditional love and acceptance that she had for her family and friends. Thank you Amuma for the coffee at your kitchen table, for sharing all of your stories, and for all of your love that made us feel we were at home. We Love You!

The family would like to thank Dr. Nani Cabrera and the staff of Heart ‘n Home Hospice for the care they gave to Josephine.

    Notes:

    Obituary of John L. Echanis
John Louis Echanis, 95, of Ontario, Oregon passed away peacefully Thursday, October 1, 2020 with his daughter at his side.

John, commonly known as “Johnny or Uncle John”, to friends and family was born March 26, 1925 to Ignacio “Jack” and Maria Echanis. He was a father to Annette Echanis and loving grandfather to Hannah and Cole Cooper.

John was a lifelong resident of Ontario where he graduated high school and was an enthusiast of almost every organized sport. John participated in basketball, baseball and track and served as the football team manager and captain of the basketball team. Several years later, John was a member of the American Legion basketball team where they won a championship trophy, a basketball referee and organizer of youth athletic teams.

In 1943, John joined the United States Army and served in WWII as a rifleman in the 129th Infantry Regiment of the 37th Division serving in New Caledonia, the Solomons and Luzon Island. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal for wounds sustained in action in the Philipine Campaign and the Bronze Service Star for “heroic achievement”,

John worked in the beverage distributing business for a large portion of his life where he gained many friends throughout the Treasure Valley. One of the first questions he asked when meeting a new person was “where are you from?”. He usually knew either a friend or relative of every new acquaintance. John owned a triplex in Ontario and enjoyed tinkering with irrigation systems and home repairs. He enjoyed traveling to visit his daughter and her family as they moved around the country. The highlight of his travels was a trip to Spain to visit the Basque country where his parents were born and raised, as the Basque heritage is a fundamental aspect of life for the Echanis family.

He is survived by his daughter Annette and her husband Matt Cooper of Pennsylvania and California; granddaughter, Hannah Cooper, VMD of Kennewick, WA; grandson, Cole Cooper of Seattle, WA; his beloved sister, Josephine Keim of Ontario, OR; Timothy and Tamara Cables and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt word of thanks to Josephine Keim and her family for helping John in many ways throughout his life; to the loving caregivers at Dorian Place and Horizon Hospice for allowing John to live with dignity in the final years of his life, and to the many friends he has made throughout the valley who made his life complete.

Graveside services will be held at Sunset Cemetery in Ontario on October 23rd at 1:00 P.M. Due to the current restrictions on gatherings, Attendance will be limited to family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his honor to the National Alzheimer's Association.

    Notes:

    08/17/2019 - Boise, ID, USA

Francisco "Frank" Benito Echanis passed away peacefully on August 17, 2019 in Boise, ID.

Frank was born on October 11, 1927 in Ontario, Oregon to Ygnacio 'Jack and Maria Echanis. Frank was the youngest of five siblings, Andy (deceased), Cam (deceased), Josephine (Ontario) and Johnny (Ontario) in Ontario, OR. Jack along with his wife Maria and his brother's Ben and Joe were sheepherders in the Steen's Mountains outside of Burns Oregon.

Frank grew up in the Basque boarding house in Ontario and was great friends with the shepherding who worked for his father.

Frank attended school in Ontario and between his junior and senior year he entered the war effort. He enlisted into the

Navy on June 1945 and was honorably discharged on August 1946. After returning from the Navy, Frank resumed high school to graduate from OHS in 1947. Frank enjoyed athletics, in particular basketball. With a year of maturity under his belt, "Lanky Frankie" was one of the best players in the Treasure Valley. Though he had an offer to play college basketball (Boise Junior College), he elected to remain in Ontario. He was employed by the Oregon State Highway Dept and worked on the survey crew and a couple nights a week he bartended at the Ontario Elks Lodge. Frank chose to stick around Ontario for his love of family and his passion for hunting and fishing. His mother encouraged Frank and brother Cam to hunt and fish to help supplement the boarding house meals. At times, over supplementation… Frank's friend pool was not limited to age, gender, race or religion. One of his friends over the years was Inez Wilson.

She and her husband, Dick, ran the fuel bulk storage, Signal Oil, facility in Ontario. Inez always thought the world of Frank. When her daughter Patsien returned from college, Inez was set her daughter becoming Mrs. Frank Echanis.

After many attempts to have Frank 'accidently' meet up with her daughter, Inez' master plan finally paid off. On Sept 14, 1953; Frank married Patsien Wilson in Nevada. Pat never let Frank forget that on the day of her marriage, he and her mother went out and had a 'few' cocktails. Being late and a bit tipsy for the ceremony, Frank was never allowed to live that pre-function down.

Frank and long time friend, Ray Plaza, purchased and operated Plaza's Tavern. Frank and Ray created a partnership that built an institution. Frank and Ray had the ability to make everyone feel like they were part of their family. Many life time friends came from their time owning the tavern. Many of these stories and events may soon be available under the Freedom of Information Act, possibly…. After selling the bar in 1978, Frank worked for Shunn Construction. He worked in the construction field until 1990. He enjoyed working with the pipe crew and most of all he gained a great friend, George Bezates. Frank thoroughly enjoyed working with the crew and observing the post work antics.

When Frank fully retired, he and his accomplice, Arnie Finkbeiner, enjoyed outdoor activities. Watching sports was enjoyable but fishing and hunting were
heir passion. Arnie was a novice at these activities, Frank was more than willing to share his skills with Arnie. Frank's his high patience level was often tested by his new partner. Frank enjoyed Arnie's company and his eagerness to explore. Together Frank (creator) and Arnie (test pilot) developed and create the fish killer, "The Basco Bobbler" currently under patent pending and Oregon State Fish and Game investigation. They both fully enjoyed retirement and socializing with the entire Treasure Valley. On any given day these two and an occasional friend, would be seen Brian Coleman's Service in Harper, Midvale, Owyhee reservoir or Brownlee reservoir….these two were always on the move.

After the death of his wife Pat in 2013 and a health setback in March of 2015, Frank moved to Boise for his remaining days. He no longer made jerky but he delivered treats to his friends, the same Frank, different address. Few people ever lived a life as full of laughter, love and friendship than 'Uncle Frank'. He rarely left Ontario because everything he loved was there. His needs were small and his willingness to share his time and love was as large as his life. How many kids did he teach to bait a hook or shoot a gun? Countless…

Frank always a stash of jerky in his truck to pass out, often delivered fresh fish loaned money to someone in need.

Frank, and his wife Pat, were always there when you needed them whether it be a place to stay, a meal or someone to listen to your troubles. He and his wife lived a life with a willingness to help anyone. Yet many often were also a victim of one of his many of practical joke, ask his beloved sister Josephine, or his good friend George, Ruth or his children. But this behavior was only partially his fault…Carmelo, his brother, and Father Kirkpatrick trained him well. He was the last to carry out their loving humor, it was a joy for all of us who knew and loved him.

Pat and Frank raised four children: Mike (deceased), Frankie (Portland/Mexico City), Liz (Meridian) and Cam (Boise). We would also like to make special thanks for Father Jos, George Bezates, Margie, Bradi Fritz and his favorite person, his sister Josephine Keim.

Frank's celebration of life reception will be held Saturday, Sept 14, 2019 at 11:00 in Ontario at the Blessed Sacrament Church with a reception following the mass. This date would also be Pat and Frank's 66th wedding anniversary.

Please in lieu of flower or gift, please make contributions to the Ontario Basque Club on his behalf.

  27. 53.  Delphina Aldecoa Descendancy chart to this point (18.Maria3, 5.Joaquina2, 1.Jose1) was born on 09 Sep 1922 in Boise, Idaho; died on 20 Mar 2020 in Boise, Idaho.

    Notes:

    1922 - 2020

Delphin-e J. Aldecoa, affectionally known as "Aunt Del", passed away at her home March 20, 2020 at the age of 97. Delphine was born September 9, 1922 in Boise to John Domingo and Maria Pagoaga Aldecoa, who immigrated from the Basque Country. She was the fifth of their five children, Maurina, Basil, Manuel, and Bene.

Delphine had a wonderful childhood with her siblings and cousins in Boise with summer visits to her father's mountain sheep camps. Del began first grade at St. Theresa's Academy at the age of four and graduated at 16. She attended the University of Idaho graduating in 1942, where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and a Fiji Wonder Girl. She was an excellent student, but found time for golf, tennis, and dancing.

When World War II broke out, Del and her sister, Bene, were hired as FAA Air Traffic Controllers in Great Falls, Montana. They were young college graduates thrown into the infancy of air traffic control and Del loved it! At the end of the war, she competed for a job at the Boise Air Terminal. Garnering this position speaks to her competence as this was considered a man's world and typically fell to Gls returning from the war. By 1971, she rose to Assistant Chief and many grateful pilots told stories of that clear, calm, professional voice guiding them to safety. In 1971, Del became Tower Chief at Hillsboro, Oregon. She was the first woman Air Traffic Control Tower Chief in the Pacific Northwest, and the second woman Tower Chief in the U.S. She left that position in 1975 and returned to Boise to help with her aging parents. During her career she was honored in the Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame, and a plaque with her picture is in the Boise Airport as well as seven other Idaho airports. Her honors include the Amelia Earhart Medal, Northwest Aviation Council Achievement Award, Federal Business Association Outstanding Service Award, and the Idaho Statesman Distinguished Citizen Award. Del lead an exceptional life for a woman of her era entering a field typically designated for men, but who earned her advanced positions through hard work, professionalism, and competence. Throughout, she was a lady who earned her colleagues' respect.

Although Del's career was important, family, friends, and community were integral to her life. While working she served as President of the Jr. League of Boise as well as volunteering at St. Alphonsus Hospital. She was a delightful hostess for many friends and enjoyed golf and tennis at Hillcrest Country Club. She sadly had lost her fiancé during the war, but her nieces, nephews, and godchildren replaced the children she might have had. They all loved and respected her. She was a mentotor, friend, and aunt. Her charm and ability to bring calm to turbulence was infamous. She had a talent for listening nonjudgmentally and offering sage guidance through problems. She taught her nieces and nephews bridge and water skiing. All have great memories of vacations in McCall and were the recipients of bountiful gifts from her worldwide travels. In her last few years, she looked forward to spring trips to Arizona with her nieces for shopping and sun. She loved family Sunday dinners and was so appreciative of the ladies from "Bridges" and Hospice who made staying in her home possible.

Our family has lost the last of her generation and we are all saddened as there is a large empty place in our lives.

Delphine is survived by three nieces, Patricia Ely, Suzanne Brown, and Jeanne Wilson, and her nephew John Wilson as well as their families.

Due to the "virus" a funeral and celebration of Delphine's life will be postponed. In Delphine's memory donations to Sacred Heart Parish, Boise would be welcome. She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church and a devoted Catholic.

  28. 54.  Irene Delphina Bengoa Descendancy chart to this point (20.Josefa3, 5.Joaquina2, 1.Jose1) was born on 25 Jan 1925 in Boise, Idaho; died on 11 May 2015.

    Notes:

Longtime Susanville resident and community volunteer Irene D. Trout passed away the morning of May 12th, following a short and pain-free fight with cancer. She celebrated her 90th birthday in January at a surprise birthday party in Chico arranged by her daughter, Linda Purdy From. Friends and family from throughout California and as far away as Oslo, Norway, and Idaho attended.

She was born January 25, 1925, in Boise, Idaho, to Jesus “Jess” and Josefa (Pagoaga) Bengoa, who were both born in Spain. The family soon moved to California where her brother, Louis, was born in 1926. Her father worked at the California Fruit Exchange and the family lived in the Fruit Growers area of Susanville.

She attended local schools, graduating with the Class of 1943 at Lassen High School where she worked on the yearbook, “Rays of Purple.” Following her passion to become a nurse, she moved to San Francisco and attended classes at Children’s Hospital. She then completed post-graduation course work at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Irene worked as the Nursing Supervisor at the Lassen County Hospital for 10 years. In 1963, she became Nurse Supervisor II at the opening of the California Correctional Center, working there until retirement in 1987. She attended nursing conferences in numerous locations, including Tokyo and Singapore, and kept her nursing license throughout her life, making many life-long friends over her career.

In retirement, she remained busy with community organizations, ever in service to others. She was appointed to the Lassen Community College Board of Trustees, Area 1, in 1994, and successfully ran for a four-year term in 1996. She also served for a period as board chair. She was instrumental in organizing a local volunteer base for the Red Cross in 2002, and helped originate the local hospice organization.

Every month Irene was a dependable volunteer for the community commodities distribution, and was a volunteer for the local Salvation Army. She chaired the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the California Correctional Center and High Desert State Prison, and helped organize yearly retiree activities for the California Correctional Center.

She also served as a past officer and participant in several local senior citizen organizations.

Her other memberships included the California State Employees Association, the Nataqua Neversweats RV group, and area Basque associations. She was also active in the Lassen High School Alumni Association.

Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving many years on the church’s Caring and Sharing Committee and delivering the sacrament to homebound parishioners. She routinely visited the sick and “adopted” persons who could use her assistance. Throughout her life, she was committed to charity and service to others.

She married James Purdy of Purdy Brothers’ Logging and raised a daughter Linda Marie. Later in life, she was a 35-year companion to Chuck Mankins, who died in 2007. She is survived by her daughter Linda Purdy From (Nick) of Oslo, Norway; Sarlat, France; and Chico; grandsons Nikolai of Los Angeles and Alexander of San Francisco, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 16th, followed by a reception at Monsignor Moran Hall.

    Notes:

Richard "Pag" Pagoaga 1922 ~ 2015 Richard "Pag" Pagoaga, 93, of Boise, died peacefully in his home on Friday, November 27, 2015, in Boise. He was born on October 11, 1922, in Boise to Ignacio and Marie Pagoaga. He was the eldest of four brothers and two sisters. They were very special to him. He was very proud of his Boise and Basque heritage. One of his fondest memories was when he was a young kid selling newspapers on the corner of 8th and Main in front of the former Eastman Building (now the Zions Bank Building). Richard attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and St. Theresa's Academy where he graduated from in 1940. He then set off on an overseas adventure with his three closest friends, Murray Kidd, Joe Goicoehea, and George Rosandick to work for Morrison Knudsen building a Naval Air and Submarine Base on Wake Island in the South Pacific. Shortly thereafter, the Japanese attacked the Island and Richard and his friends became prisoners of war for four grueling yyears. All his fellow POWs formed a life-long bond and held annual reunions until their very end. Upon returning from War World II, Richard moved backed to Boise where he meet his beautiful wife of 66 years, Kathleen Wilson, whom he loved dearly. They were married at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weiser, Idaho. Richard then embarked upon a career in banking. First, with the Credit Bureau, then with the Bank of Idaho (now Wells Fargo), where he rose to the executive ranks. Many of Boise's iconic car dealerships and businesses got their start because this old fashioned banker believed the most important criteria for a loan was the character of the borrower. Richard and Kay had two children, Jill and Rich Jr. He was a wonderful f father. In 1985, Richard retired from banking and ventured into an active retirement. He exercised at the downtown YMCA three days a week up until three months before his passing. He really enjoyed visiting with his fellow members and the stafff. In 1988, Richard, Murray, Joe and George took their sons Rich Jr., Bruce, Dan and Tim along with his brother Al Pagoaga (a Marine on Iwo Jima) and returned to Wake Island for a special POW reunion. It was an emotional yet extremely fun journeey for all. He had a secret talent as a "pet whisperer" and watched cats and dogs for family and friends. Richard and Kay visited the birth place of his Atatxi and Amuma (Grandpa & Grandma) at Arantzamendi in Motrico, Spain and attended the Boise Jaialdi Basque Festivals. For sixteen enjoyable years they partially wintered in Green Valley, Arizona with Kay's sister Dorothy Peterson. They also had extensive travels throughout the West, Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii and had several fun fillled family trips to Hawaii and Cabo San Lucas with their son, their daughter-in-law Jeanne and granddaughter Abby. One of his greatest joys was being able to help babysit and spend time with his granddaughter. Richard was a tough and special man, who touched the lives of many. He was preceded in death by his father and mother (our beloved Amuma); his brothers, Frank and Henry; sister-in-law, Dorothy Peterson; father-in-law, Oren Wilson; mother-in-law, Rosemary Wilson (our beloved Nana)a); and his darling daughter, Jill. Richard is survived by his dear wife, Kay; his son, Rich Jr.; daughter-in-law, Jeanne; granddaughter, Abby; brother, Al; sisters, Marge Campbell and Vickie Peterson; and the extended Yribar, Campbell and Wagner families. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Boise VA, Harrison Home Hospice and Trinity Home Care. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Our Lady of Rosary Catholic Church with interment at the Morris Hill Cemetery. Following his service, all are welcome to join us for a Basque luncheon at the Basque Center. In lieu of flowers, a donation may given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or your favorite charity. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Richard's memorial webpage at www.summersfuneral.com.

    Notes:

    (Boise, January 30, 1925 ~ Boise, August 19, 2017)

Albert "Al" Pagoaga, 91, of Boise, died peacefully in his home on Monday, January 30, 2017.

He was born on August 19, 1925, in Boise to Ignacio and Maria Yribar Pagoaga. He had three brothers and two sisters. They were very special to him. He was very proud of his Boise and Basque heritage. One of his fondest memories was when he was a teenager playing six-man football for St. Teresa's Academy.

Al attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and St. Teresa's Academy where he graduated from in 1943. He excelled at math and loved numbers. With World War II beginning, he and his closest and lifelong friend Will Overgaard volunteered to join ththe Marines. Semper Fi was a motto that Al would live by his entire life. Al was part of the 5th Marine Division that laid an amphibious assault on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima - a 4.5 mile long, 2.5 mile wide Island of barren volcanic rock iin the Pacific Ocean. On the 20th day of the battle, on part of the Island thought to be secure, Al was eating lunch with three friends in his foxhole when out of nowhere a single Japanese mortar hit. The blast killed his three friends and caused Al to lose part of his leg. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Only 32 men out of roughly 200 from Al's Easy Company (E-2-27) made it off the Island alive. All told, 6,800 Americans were killed and 19,200 were injured in The Battle of Iwo Jima.

Al was first flown to Guam and then to Mare Island Naval Hospital in California where he convalesced for 10 months. Afterwards, he moved backed to Boise where he put his love for numbers to work. Al joined First Security Bank of Idaho (now Welllls Fargo) as an auditor. During his 40 year career with the bank, he was legendary for his thoroughness and integrity and for uncovering unscrupulous bank employees. He loved his audit travels to all the corners of Idaho and particularly enjoyed socializing, eating, drinking and playing pool with the locals. Ironically, while in a bar in Grangeville after work, Al meet John Rosenthal the American photographer who took the iconic World War II photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. Although he was never married or had any children, he loved his nieces and nephews and they adored him. He was a wonderful uncle.

In 1985, Al retired and ventured into an active retirement of travel and socializing. In 1988, Al joined Wake Island Survivors (brother Richard, friends Murray Kidd, Joe Goicoehea, and George Rosandick) and their sons Rich Jr., Bruce, Dan and Tiim for a reunion on Wake Island. It was an extremely fun and memorable journey for all. Al, along with his brother Richard and his wife Kay and sisters Marge and Vicky were able to visit the birth place of his Atatxi and Amuma (Grandpa & Grandmama) at Arantzamendi in Motrico, Spain. He also attended many Boise Jaialdi Basque Festivals. Al and nephew Rich Jr. made trips together to the United Kingdom & Ireland and then to the Northeastern USA & Canada. A special highlight was their visit to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington D.C. He attended many 5th Marine Division reunions and also Norte Dame Football games with fellow Easy Company veteran Bill Madden right up until his passing. In 2015 Al's life came full circle, when he and 20 other Iwo Jima veterans were selected by the Greatest Generations Foundation for an all-expense paid trip to Guam and Iwo Jima.

Al was a tough and genuine man, whose generosity touched the lives of many.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother (our beloved Amuma), his brothers Frank, Henry and Richard, nephew Allan Campbell and brother-in-law Mel Peterson. Al is survived by sisters Marge Campbell and Vicky Peterson, sister-in-law Kay P Pagoaga, nephews Rich Pagoaga Jr. (wife Jeanne), Doug Campbell (wife Robyn), Hank Campbell (wife Cheryl) and nieces Heather Campbell and Cathy Campbell (husband Marty Adell). Al is also survived by great nephews Justin Campbell (wife Amy), Tommy Mann (wife Michelle), Trevor Campbell, Cameron Chamberlain, Taylor Campbell, Nick Campbell (wife Alyssa), Jake Campbell, Alec Swann and Andrew Swann and great nieces Sabrina Campbell and Abby Pagoaga along with the extended Yribar families. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Boise VA and Brownfield's Prosthetics.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 13, at 11:00 am at the Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church with interment at the Morris Hill Cemetery. Following his service, all are welcome to join us for a Basque luncheon at the Basque Center.
