- Amelia (Millie) Alcorta, age 92, passed away peacefully at Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca on Wednesday, March 5.
Born Dec. 23, 1922, in Winnemucca to John and Dolores (Bengoa) Muguira, Amelia grew up in Winnemucca where she attended the Winnemucca Grammar School and graduated from the eighth grade. During that time, she lived with John and Marie Esparza at the Winnemucca Hotel. The Esparza family loved her as both a daughter and sister in her nine years with them.
Upon graduating, Amelia moved to McDermitt where she lived with Angel and Candida Aboitiz. There she began working as a clerk and bartender at the Highway Bar and Store where she eventually met the love of her life, Benardo Alcorta. They marrieied in 1948, and with the union, Amelia officially achieved "sainthood" sanctioned by the Vatican. Amelia and Benardo were blessed with two children, Lorraine and Frank. They were loved so well by Amelia that Benardo repeatedly told her she would go get the moon for them if they asked. She would readily agree with him.
Amelia was a homemaker as well as a partner in all of her husband's many endeavors including ranching, operating a full service gas station, and wrecker service. In later years she was surrounded by her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored and often cared for.

Amelia was preceded in death by her husband, Benardo, sister Mary Strawbridge, brother Frank Muguira, baby brother Muguira who died at birth, son Frank and great grandson Jordan Rugh. Survivors include her brother Cleto (Charlotte) Muguira, daughter Lorraine (Howard) Huttman, grandchildren, Beverly (Travis) Nagel, Heather (John) Journeycake, Hailey (Dustin) Christean, Jamie Alcorta, David (Corinna) Alcorta, Ryan (Reme) Huttman, Olivia (Dale) Mentaberry as well as 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14 in McDermitt, Nev., followed by a reception at the McDermitt Community Center. All relatives and friends are welcome to attend.
The family would like to thank all of the friends who would stop to visit with and bring food or gifts to Amelia at her home in McDermitt in the years following Benardo's passing. Company gave her great joy.
