| 968 | Jacqueline Pearl ‘Jackie’ Brown Feb. 10, 1933-June 2, 2015 Fruitland — Jacqueline Pearl “Jackie” Brown, 82, of Fruitland, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 of natural causes. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 10th at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Interment will be held privately for family. Jackie was born Feb. 10, 1933 in Eagle Point, OR to Sharon H. and Pearl (Phelan) Hawk. She joined an older sister, Joan. She lived for a few years in Lewiston, ID, and then moved to Ontario, OR; graduating from Ontario High School in 1951. She attended Eastern Oregon College of Education in La Grande, OR where she graduated with a degree in elementary education. She was a teacher for several years in Portland, OR, and then in 1959 she married Paul Plaza and moved back to Ontario. They had two children, Kathleen and John. She was a devoted stay at home mom for all of their growing up years. She started her own business, a ceramics studio in her basement, which was very successful with a wait list for students wanting to take classes from her. Jackie was a natural teacher, and loved passing on her knowledge to her students. She won several awards for her work, including the Peggy Award given to professional level ceramicists. She was talented in many diverse areas of crafts, including card making and tole painting. She always had a “project” going and it was always something beautiful. After her marriage to Paul ended, she worked for a while at the Argus Observer, using her artistic talents in designing ads for the paper. In 1982 she married Carl Brown of Boise. She enjoyed living in Boise and continued her many hobbies, adding on a new one—collecting antiques of the Victorian era. She loved beautiful things, and loved decorating her home with them. Jackie was a very generous person, and giving beautiful gifts was something that gave her a lot of pleasure. Christmas was her favorite holiday. Her husband Carl passed away in 2000, and a few years after this she decided to relocate to Fruitland, ID. She continued to enjoy her hobbies, and being near her grandchildren, Alex and Alyssa. Jackie was preceded in death by her sister, Joan, her mother and father, and her husband Carl. She is survived by her son John Plaza (Wendy) of Payette and their children Alex and Alyssa; her daughter Kathleen Dowd (Jim) of Loveland, CO and their children Michael and Rachel. | 969 | James (Jim) Joseph Arritola, 67 was born in Boise, Idaho on April 29, 1946 to Joe and Josephine Arritola. He passed away May 18, 2013, after a long battle with diabetes. Jim graduated from Borah High School in 1964. While in high school he excelled in football, wrestling and track/field. He continued his education at College of Idaho, where he also played football. He graduated from C of I in 1968 with a B.A. degree in English. His first teaching job was at Vale High School, where he taught all levels of English. He also coached football, track/field, and wrestling. While head wrestling coach at VHS, he and George Fuson started the Vale Assassins Little Kids Wrestling Club. He also met his wife of 40 years, Kathy Goade . Together they had 2 sons, Joe (Theresa) Arritola, AJ Arritola, and a daughter Sarah (TJ) Rodriguez, 4 grandsons, Kaelleb, Joshawah, Mathieu, Thomas, and 1 granddaughter, Zettie. After Jim’s teaching career he remained active in many other activities including; St. Patricks C.C.D, Malheur County Fair Board, Ontario Basque Club, Malheur County Council on Aging, and substitute teaching, he was especially fond of his substititute teaching in Jordan Valley/Arock, and driving for Standage Farms during the fall harvest. Jim enjoyed going to and watching BSU football games, he was an avid sheep breeder, who liked going to fairs and sales throughout the West, especially the Nugget Show/Sale in Reno. Jim was very proud of his Basque heritage, his family, and his pride and joys his grandchildren. He loved watching them show at the fair, playing sports, or just spending time with them. The Arritola farm allowed Jim to teach his children and grandchildren many life lessons. He is survived by his mother Josephine, his wife, 3 children, daughter in law, son in law, 5 grandchildren, sister Joene Arritola, niece Amy Romans, 2 nephews Tanner and Trevor Romans. He was preceded in death by his father Joe, his stepfather Tom, his father in law AJ Goade, mother in law Dorothy Goade, and numerous aunts and uncles. A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patricks Catholic Church is Vale, Oregon. A Mass of the Christian burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. on May 29, 2013 at St. Patricks in Vale. A private burial will be done at a later time. | 976 | Jeanette Azcuenaga 1913 - 2015 Jeanette (Olson) Azcuenaga passed away on November 20, 2015, in Lynnwood, Washington. She was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, on November 24, 1913, to Samuel and Anna Olson. Jeanette was the second daughter of Swedissh immigrant parents. Her first home was on a homestead in South Dakota. She and her older sister Esther rode horseback to attend a one-room school on the prairie. As a teenager, Jeanette moved with her family to Raymond, Washington, and later t to Boise, Idaho, where she earned a business college degree. She met her husband, Edwin Azcuenaga, when she was working as a secretary in the Idaho State Capitol building. Jeanette and Ed were married in 1939 and moved to McCall, Idaho, where E Ed worked for the United States Forest Service. Their two daughters, Joanne and Mary, were born there. The family later lived in Williams, Arizona, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. After Ed's retirement, Jeanette and Ed moved to Sacramento, California. After Ed's death in 1996, Jeanette moved to Edmonds, Washington, to be with family. Jeanette loved to draw and paint. While in Santa Fe, she studied with several local artists. She also loved to travel and was always willing to try new adventures with a smile on her face! From time to time, she wrote stories about her childhood and eventually made them into a book that was published in 2010. Jeanette moved to Brighton Court in Lynnwood, Washington, in 2002, and enjoyed her new home a and many friendships there. She is survived by daughters Joanne White and Mary Azcuenaga; son-in-law Danny White; grandson Philip White; granddaughter-in-law Jennifer White; and cousins Marjorie and Robert Banks. Arrangements were made by Beck's Funeral Home for cremation and burial in Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. | 977 | Jess Joseph Jaca Jess Joseph Jaca passed away Aug. 16, 2013, in Elko, Nev. Jess was born in McDermitt, Nev., on July 8, 1928, to Joe and Vicenta (Bea) Jaca. He attended school in McDemitt and Jordan Valley, Ore., where he graduated in 1947. After graduation he returned to McDermitt, residing there until he and his wife moved to Battle Mountain, Nev., in 2011. Jess married Aurelia Naveran on Sept. 2, 1951. They had two daughters, Joyce and Jan. During the course of his life Jess had several occupations. As a young boy he worked on his grandpa Mendieta's ranch and helped his father with the family trucking business. He went to work at Cordero Mine, starting in the power house and later becoming the bookkeeper/office manager. After the closure of the mine he went to work for Jaca Truck Lines until the business sold in 1991. At this time Jess purchased his own truck which he operated until his retirement in 2000. Jess was very civic-minded throughout his life. He served on the Humboldt County School Board, TV District, McDermitt Fire District, McDermitt Rodeo Board, and Harney Electric Board. He donated his services to 4-H by hauling the kids and their chaperones to camp every summer. He also hauled their livestock after the annual Labor Day Sale. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bea, and sister Irene. He is survived by Aurelia, his wife and sweetheart of 61 years, his daughters Joyce Williams (John) and Jan Harvey (Dennis), brother, Louis Jaca and sister, Jacqueline Weber, grandchildren Jamie Dixon (Travis), Joye Williams (Colin), Abby Burkhart (Thain), Matthew and Rebecca Harvey, great-grandchildren Alyx and Teylor Dixon, Adriene, McKenzie, and Ryker Burkhart, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at 12 p.m. at the McDermitt Community Hall, followed by burial at the McDermitt Cemetery. There will be a luncheon after the services. | 981 | John B. Laxague, Sr. John B. Laxague, Sr., one of the most respected Supervisors in Modoc County history, passed away May 12, 2001 at home in Wilton, Calif. John B. was born on March 5, 1911 in Eagleville, Calif. to Jennie Laxague, one-and-one-half months after his father John B. Laxague, Sr. was killed at Little High Rock. He graduated from Surprise Valley High School in 1929 where he was a star athlete, honor student and student body president. He enrolled in the University of Nevada at Reno, but later completed his college education at Armstrong Business College in Sacramento. He married Janie Espil on October 1, 1938. They devoted their lives to raising their family and developing their ranching operation. For 30 years, Mr. Laxague was a member of the Modoc County Board of Supervisors, over 17 of them as its Chairman. In the first 25 years, he missed only one meeting. Highlights included completing the zoning of the county, construction of many county buildings, the nursing home in Alturas and, the Surprise Valley Hospital. When asked why he became a Supervisor, he said that because he was not able to serve in World War II, this was a way to give back to the people of Modoc County, with another kind of service. When he retired from the Modoc County Board of Supervisors, letters poured in from around the state. A special letter came from then President Ronald Reagan who had tried to recruit him to be his Secretary of Agriculture when he was Governor of California. None of that meant as much to him as the warm retirement reception from the people of Surprise Valley. Mr. Laxague served as President of the Wool Growers Association. Starting in 1940, he served on the Bureau of Land Management district, state and federal advisory boards. He was named Cattleman of the Year twice, both for his excellent ranch operation and for his public service. He was an avid sports fan of the San Francisco 49'ers, the San Francisco Giants and more recently the Sacramento Kings, attending Kings' games this past season. His wife Janie passed away in 1986. In 1990, he and Connie Kingston of Boise, Idaho were married in Reno, Nev. He is survived by his daughter Lucie Fjeldstad of Bellevue, Wash.; his son John B. Laxague, Jr. of Gardnerville, Calif.; and three grandsons; his wife Connie of Cedarville and her three children Bryan, Kori and Kyle and their families of the Sacramento area. He is also survived by a brother Frank Arreche of Cedarville; sister Faye Harrington of Pine Grove, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by many people whom he has mentored and loved throughout their lives. Mr. Laxague was a remarkable man who touched the lives of many people and will be missed by all. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. James Catholic Church in Cedarville on Wednesday, May 16 at 10 a.m. Interment followed at the Cedarville Cemetery. Pall bearers were William Laxague, Sr., Bud Laxague, Ron Laxague, Ron Henderson, Louis Arreche, Tom Espil, Steve Hicks and Erik Nissen. | 982 | John Bicandi 1925 ~ 2016 John Bicandi passed away peacefully on February 16, 2016 at 90 years old. John was born to Ciriaco and Maria Cruz Bicandi on July 27, 1925 in Nampa, Idaho. Soon thereafter, John, his parents and 5 siblings moved to a ranch in Marsing, where John attended elementary school and high school. It was at Marsing High School where John met the love of his life, Nina Mae Hale. John adored Nina, and has missed her terribly since her death in 2006. John and Nina were blessed with four sons; Gary, Jack, Jim and Pat. Shortly after John and Nina were married, they purchased a dairy ranch in Marsing. John and Nina spent many happy years on the ranch, just across the road from John's family ranch. Their sons have maany wonderful memories of their lives on the ranch. After running the ranch for more than 35 years, John and Nina moved to Winnemucca, Nevada, where John managed a hay farm until his retirement in 2000. John had a great sense of humor, and he and Nina had many lifelong friends in addition to their large families. John and Nina welcomed many guests at the Marsing ranch—neighbors, friends, family and nearby hunters were always welcome for one of Nina's amazing meals and infamous desserts. While Nina cooked, John entertained and kept everyone laughing. Many evenings at the ranch were filled with music, laughter, good food and a game of cards. When Nina and John weren't entertaining, they could often be found at the Nampa Elk's Lodge for a night of dinner and dancing. John was also proud of his Basque heritage and was a founding member of the Euzkaldunak Basque Club of Boise and Txoko Ona Basque Club of Homedale. John is survived by his sons, Gary and (Janice) Bicandi of Star, Pat and (Ruth) Bicandi of Elko, Nevada, and daughter-in-law, Antonia Bicandi of Boise. John was blessed with and is also survived by eight grandchildren- Rochelle (Greg) Morse, Maite (Jay) Kouns, Jim Bicandi, Jacqueline (Geoff) Kite-Powewell, Nicholas (Izar) (Bicandi), Beverly (Travis) Nagel, Jamie Alcorta, and Andy (Kristina) Bicandi. John is also survived by great-grandchildren- Macy, Easton, Brooklyn, Brody, Amaya, Jordan, Ashley Elle, Isabella, Jackson, Gabriella, Charlotte, Joe, Courtney, Javonni, Adree, Livee and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his wife, Nina; sons, Jack and Jim; parents, Ciriaco and Maria Cruz; and siblings, Lucas, Angel, Connie, Pilar, Marie, Salvador and Ciriacco. The family would like to thank the staff of at the Autumn Cove Assisted Living Center for their wonderful care and compassion during John's final years. Restore the Guest Book John Echave and Kristen Echave On June 30, 2012, John "Jock" Martin Echave passed away at his home in Jordan Valley, Oregon. He was 70 years old. Jock was born on January 30, 1942, in Winnemucca, Nevada, the eldest son of John and Marge. He and his younger brother grew up at Oregon Canyon Ranch and enjoyed all the pleasures of ranch life. Jock was a gifted athlete and eventually played football at UNR, sporting the #33. In 1964, he marrried Karen Goodrich and they enjoyed the next 46 years together. They had three children: Kristen, Michon, and Jon. Jock enjoyed cattle work, riding horses, haying, and he was an avid trapper who also loved hunting the big bucks. He helped coach his kids sports teams and was a constant on the sidelines. He had his own plane and few all over the country watching his children. Later in life, he doted on his grandkids and spoiled them rotten. Jock is preceded in death by his wife Karen and parents Marge and John. An open house was held on July 7th at the home of Jon and Tara Echave, 3054 Dinwitty Lane, Jordan Valley, Oregon, for Jock and his daughter Kristen, who after a short hospital stay, passed away less than two full days after her father. Born in Winnemucca, Nevada, on November 20, 1967, Kristen Eileen was the first born child of Karen and Jock. A mirror image of her father, Kristen excelled at anything she set her mind to.Kristen was the true epitome of the All-American girl. Upon graduation she attended the University of Idaho on a full-ride academic scholarship pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. In 1991, Kristen married Joe Baptist. They made their home at Oregon Canyon Ranch and had two wonderful children: Kaine Mathew (February 22, 1993) and Bayley Lorraine (January 19, 1997). Kristen enjoyed her children immensely and was always proud of them. She was their biggest fan and always believed in them regardless of their life choices. Friends and family will cherish many fond memories of Kris. She was well-known for being a fantastic cook, hunting, singing and dancing to music, her natural humor, and brutally honest personality, strong willed nature and true belief in relationships. | 986 | John Mentaberry, one of Humboldt County's pioneer sheepmen, died Tuesday in a local hospital following a long illness. He was 91. Born Sept 6, 1882, in France, he came to the United States in 1906 at the the Washburn Creek Ranch near McDermittt, which he operated until 1958 when he retired. Survivors include children John Jr and Mrs Mary Yrueta both of Winnemucca, Anne Bengoa of Orovada, Fausto of Reno, Henry and Delores Jones, both of Winnemucca, George and Eddy of McDermitt and Dave of Reno. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. today in the Eddy and Son Mortuary here. He was the sixth child born to proud Basque Immigrants, Edward and Maria Santa Zatica Osoro. John married Marjorie Helen Quinn on January 3, 1941 and they were life partners for 69 years. He attended Bingham High School where he excelled in sports and was All-State in football. John, a first generation American, proudly served his country during World War II along side h his brothers and friends from Bingham Canyon, Utah. John worked for Kennecott Copper for 42 years, retiring in 1982. He was especially proud of his 68 years of service as a volunteer in the Bingham Canyon Fire Department. He enjoyed his years oof service with the Copperton Boy Scouts, little league baseball and the youth of Bingham and Highland Boy. Dad was a hard working man that could fix anything with a roll of electricians tape and a can of spray paint. He was the life of the party and thought he could sing and dance with the best of them. No one enjoyed life more than Dad and he would talk to anyone who would listen whether he knew them or not. John is survived by his wife Marjorie; children, Jon (Karol) Osoro, James (Laura) Osoro, Christine (Craig) Holder, Billy (Marlene) Osoro, Jerry (Debbie) Osoro, and Jeanie Osoro Johnson; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren. Johnny will be laid to rest at the Willamette National Cemetery. The family will honor Johnny's request for a private service. Johnny was born August 21, 1922 in Boise, Idaho to Jose and Lucasia Chacartegui. Both his parents were Basque immigrants from Spain. Johnny was the youngest of six brothers and was the last survivor. Upon graduating from Nampa High School in 1941 he joined the Army and served his country during World War II. Johnny was awarded and received the Purple Heart. Johnny married his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Elliott in Nampa, Idaho. They remained married until his death. He worked for Department of Agriculture as a Federal Meat Inspector. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Antone, Phillip, Eusibio, Julio and twin brother Joe. He is survived by his wife Dorothy and his children Jack and wife Lisa, Robert, Phyllis and her husband Gary Merrick, Kenneth and his wife Sue as well as his grandchildren Angie Minic, Benita Changi, Johnny Chacartegui, Lori Ann Merges, Doug Merrick, David Merrick, Cody Chacartegui, Melissa Chacartegui and two great-grandchildren. | 989 | Jose "Joe" Luis Churruca March 22, 1921 - May 31, 2016 Jose "Joe" Luis Churruca, 95, of Marsing, passed away of natural causes on May 31, 2016, in Nampa, Idaho. Born March 22, 1921 in Boise, Idaho, Joe was the 2nd son of 1st generation Basque imimmigrants, Carmen and Frank Churruca. His early childhood was spent in the Boise Valley area. In 1930 his family moved to Marsing, Idaho. He played high school football and graduated from Marsing High School in 1940. In 1943 he married Elizabeth Ann "Bette" Willin. Together, they were blessed with 4 children. Joe was a life-long Marsing resident, farmer and Black Angus cattle-rancher. He was instrumental in helping establish the Marsing-Homedale Alfalfa Seed Co-op. Joe was received awards from National Cattlemen's Association and won Owyhee County Grassman of the Year. Joe served on the Labor Camp Corp, FHA Committee, and was an active supporter of 4H youth. He loved his family, hunting & fishing. He was a supporter of the M Marsing Disaster Auction and Marsing Senior Center. Mom died in 2002, but Dad continued to live on the farm. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to help an old person live out his last years as independently as possible. With the help of the village called Marsing, Dad was fortunate to be able to live alone in his own home. He had wonderful neighbors and friends who watched over him. Especially the Senior Center, water aerobics friends and card playing buddies. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Bette; 2 infant children, Jack and Joyce; two brothers and his parents. He is survived by his children: JoAnn Morrow, Judy Welty, Jennifer (Jim) Barrett and Phillip (Julie) Aranzamendi; 9 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A Viewing for Joe will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 PM with Rosary Recital at 7:00 PM at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Dee wore several hats during his lifetime. He was a buckaroo and sheepherder before starting his own business, Dee's Distributing. He delivered dairy and ice cream products to stores and restaurants in the Winnemucca area. He enjoyed carpentry, repairing most anything and lending a hand wherever needed. | 994 | Joseph George Ancho, 90, of Blackfoot, ID passed away May 23, 2016 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, in Idaho Falls. Joseph was born September 5, 1925 in Battle Mountain, Nevada to Jose Ancho (Abaurregaina, Nafarroa) and Dominga Urriolabetia (Ondarroa, Bizkaia). He graduated from Battle Mountain High School in Nevada before serving his country in the Army during World War II. On February 24, 1945, he was on a mission to build a pontoon bridge across the Saar River in Germany where he was seriously injured and suffered the loss of his right leg for which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After the war, he obtained a Pharmacy degree from Idaho State. Joseph married Angelines Echevarria [daughter of Francisco Echevarria (Zamudio, Bizkaia) and Carmen Arestizabal (Bilbao, Bizkaia)] in Blackfoot on August 13, 1950. In 1960 Joseph bought Ancho Drug and ran it with his wife, Angie, for 23 years. He was a member of the Catholic Church. In his free time, Joseph enjoyed: fly tying, fishing, guns, squirrels, tinkering and being Angie’s fixer upper. Joseph was a proud member of the Blackfoot Kiwanis Club. He held the position of President of that organization. He also was a member of the Third and Fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He belonged to the Blackfoot Elks Lodge for 60 years. Aunt Catherine had no children before she died in 1918 from the Flu Epidemic. Jean Bidondo remarried and had a son named Pete Bidondo who lived in Wilmington. In April 2011 Josephine gave this info regarding her parents: In San Bernardino at the slaughter house Goinea was the manager, Lorenzo and Juanito were workers. Two Biarneses (French) also worked there. John Errecart also worked there but since he had asthma, he had to go to dryer climate so moved to Tranquillity with his wife and kids. The Layanas, Serverino and wife Cotilda also worked there, so did Simion Layana. Larrinaga nació el 21 de agosto en 1918 en un edificio junto a la iglesia de Ispaster, municipio del que también eran su padre y su madre, de Goierri. Fue el mayor de nueve hermanos y hermanas. Entre los seis y los catorce años estudió en la escuela local, en tiempos de la dictadura española de Primo de Rivera. Al mismo tiempo, al ser el mayor de los hijos del matrimonio, se vio en la necesidad de ayudar en la casa y ya con diez años iba con su aitite a hacer carbón. A los catorce comenzó a trabajar con un tío hasta la evacuación que se llevó a cabo por la llegada de la Guerra Civil. Fue entonces cuando se alistó como voluntario en el batallón número 40 Mungia del PNV formado en septiembre de 1936, en la compañía Santxustegi. Él siempre estuvo orgulloso de haber pertenecido al Eusko Gudarostea presidido por el lehendakari José Antonio Aguirre. preso en gasteiz Al mes y medio, este afiliado al PNV en Ea cayó en manos de los sublevados contra la Segunda República. Le hicieron preso en Gasteiz. Fue represaliado con cárcel en la prisión de Orduña, Palencia, Guadalajara... así como obligado como esclavo de Franco a formar parte en lo que los golpistas llamaban batallones de trabajadores. A su vuelta de la guerra se casó a la edad de 30 años en Ea, donde tuvo familia.
