Book Tour - Boyhood Among the Woolies - April 15, 2024
Please join us at Ontario's Historic Train Depot as Richard Etulain, PhD discusses his new book, “Boyhood Among the Woolies: Growing up on a Basque Sheep Ranch”.
Dr. Etulain was born August 26, 1938, in Wapato, Washington. The son of a Basque immigrant livestock man and a sod house frontier mother, he was reared on a sheep ranch in eastern Washington. After public schools in Washington, he gained double majors in English and history (with high honors) at Northwest Nazarene College (1955-60). He completed a master’s in American literature in 1962 and received his PhD in American history and literature in 1966—both at the University of Oregon. He spent nearly 40 years as a classroom instructor in history, English, and American Studies Departments at Northwest Nazarene College (now University), Idaho State University, and the University of New Mexico.

Ontario Basque Club Obtains Large Grant for Historic Train Depot
Ontario Basque Club is proud to announce that we applied for and have received a generous grant from the Kinsman Foundation to replace the flooring in Ontario's historic train depot. The Ontario, Oregon, Basque Club, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, assumed responsibility for maintenance and supervision of the Ontario Train Depot from the Ontario Train Depot Restoration Committee on November 10, 2007. Through grants, donations, and their own labor, the Basque Club renovated the north portion of the main floor for use as a headquarters. They also funded the relocation of the Union Pacific Office to its current location. Subsequently, the Basque Club built a staircase and opened up the attic space, the largest portion of which is available for public use. To rent the depot click here.
Drexel Foundation Collaboration
We recently collaborated with the Drexel H.Foundation on a project called Rest, Repair, Recharge & Rejuvenate in Downtown Vale on the authentic Oregon Trail. The Basque club provided the text and graphic design for the informative panels on Basque history in the area.
